The location where crime events occur is an important factor in the analysis of crime. It is not only important where a crime incident takes place but also the characteristics of those places and the environment in which incident occurs. Thus, examination of spatial data such as street networks, parcel information, school locations, commercial and residential zoning, is imperative for effective crime analysis, crime prevention and police activities. Using variables, relating to five incident types as burglary, auto, pick pocket, usurp and murder, which are recorded by the police in 2003 and including the information of where and when crime incident occurs, this thesis attempts to analyze the high-incident areas and the relationship between these incidents and land uses for two important police precincts of Çankaya district of Ankara; Centre of Çankaya Police Station Zone and Bahçelievler Police Station Zone. The aim of the study is to improve a methodology for the determination of the effects of land use variables on the distribution of crime incidents. The study applies some methods related to the spatial data analysis which can be also integrated with Geographic Information Systems. In the study, in order to identify the current pattern of the incidents, kernel estimation method is found as the best method while Nearest Neighbor Hierarchical Clustering method is preferred to analyze what land uses are prone to incidents. In order to determine the properties of the relationships between land use and incidents correlation calculations are performed. At the end, the potential crime incident areas are determined by referring these relationships with GIS functions.

A Spatio-Temporal Crime Prediction Model for Crime Prevention
Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Polat, Esra (2011-05-10)
Development of effective crime prevention strategies requires understanding of the spatial/spatio-temporal occurrences of crime events and then predicting the number, place and time of crime events. In this respect, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) provide efficient tools for analyzing the spatial and spatio-temporal crime events. Similarly developing prediction models for criminal and terrorist activities can directly support crime prevention and counter-terrorism planning, respectively. This study p...
Exploring crime in a spatial and temporal context
Erdoğan, Aygün; Gedik, Ayşe; Department of City and Regional Planning (2007)
This study explores incidents in a spatial and temporal context to achieve suitable strategies for urban planning and policing in crime prevention/reduction. For this purpose, “space” and “time” related incidents are analyzed through “new crime ecology” theories within the designed “loose-coupled” GIS-based system at “mezo”-“micro” ecological levels in a case area within Ankara Metropolis, in 2000. Its main argument is that incidents display differences in the spatial and/or temporal distribution among plan...
A GIS system for ambulatory transportation
Gulden, B; Mumcuoglu, E; Baykal, Nazife (2004-02-18)
In public safety, geography plays a significant role. One of the most important front-line elements of public safety is an efficient emergency transport and care system. The capacity to access and process information rapidly and organize resources where needed can be critically important in an emergency situation. Information about the locality of an event or a disaster is often vital in knowing how to respond. A significant operation for the handling of emergency incidents is the routing of ambulances to i...
Assessment of vulnerability to earthquake hazards using spatial multicriteria analysis : Odunpazarı, Eskişehir case study
Servi, Mehmet; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2004)
The aim of this thesis is to develop a GIS methodology to assess urban vulnerability to earthquake through a spatial analytical procedure in which vulnerability is taught of as a spatial decision problem. The main concepts within the framework is vulnerability assessment. In its typology, the defined technology is highly current, emergent and necessary for the local goverments. Considering the discussions on subsidiarity for local area services such a knowledge is hoped to prove the capacity of local goverm...
Addressing Fear of Crime in Public Space: Gender Differences in Reaction to Safety Measures in Train Transit
Yavuz, Nilay (2010-11-01)
Research has identified several factors that affect fear of crime in public space. However, the extent to which gender moderates the effectiveness of fear-reducing measures has received little attention. Using data from the Chicago Transit Authority Customer Satisfaction Survey of 2003, this study aims to understand whether train transit security practices and service attributes affect men and women differently. Findings indicate that, while the presence of video cameras has a lower effect on women's feelin...
