In this study, forced cooling of heat sinks mounted on CPU̕s was investigated. Heat sink effectiveness, effect of turbulence models, effect of radiation heat transfer and different heat sink geometries were numerically analyzed by commercially available computational fluid dynamics softwares Icepak and Fluent. The numerical results were compared with the experimental data and they were in good agreement. Conjugate heat transfer is simulated for all the electronic cards and packages by solving Navier-Stokes equations. Grid independent, well converged and well posed models were run and the results were compared. The best heat sink geometry is selected and it is modified in order to have lower maximum temperature distribution in the heat sink.

Heat removal from a large scale warm water storage
Kayserilioğlu, Yavuz Selim; Oskay, Rüknettin; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
A preliminary experimental study was performed in order to investigate the charging and heat removal characteristics of a sensible heat storage. Two sets of experiments were performed at two aspect ratios. Heat removal processes of these two sets were different while the charging processes were similar. In the first set of experiments, after the charging of the storage unit with relatively warm water was complete, heat removal process was started with simple heat exchangers from different elevations within ...
A study of laminar forced film condensation of vapor flowing in cross-flow direction through the annular space between two concentric cylinders
Atılgan, Ahmet Koray; Yamalı, Cemil; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
In this study laminar forced film condensation of vapor flowing in cross-flow direction through the annular space between two concentric cylinders was investigated numerically. To achieve this, governing equations of the vapor and the condensate flow in cross-flow direction between two concentric cylinders were developed. After obtaining the equations in integral forms by using the finite difference technique the vapor boundary layer thicknesses on the inner and outer cylinders and the condensate layer thic...
CFD simulations and reduced order modeling of a refrigerator compartment including radiation effects
Bayer, Özgür; Paksoy, Akin; Aradağ Çelebioğlu, Selin (Elsevier BV, 2013-05-01)
Considering the engineering problem of natural convection in domestic refrigerator applications, this study aims to simulate the fluid flow and temperature distribution in a single commercial refrigerator compartment by using the experimentally determined temperature values as the specified constant wall temperature boundary conditions. The free convection in refrigerator applications is evaluated as a three-dimensional (3D), turbulent, transient and coupled non-linear flow problem. Radiation heat transfer ...
Experimental investigation of R134a flow in a 1.65 mm copper minitube
Tekin, Bilgehan; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Kakaç, S.; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
This thesis investigates the refrigerant (R-134a) flow in a minitube experimentally. The small scale heat transfer is a relatively new research area and has been in favor since the end of 1970’s. Refrigerant flow in mini- and microscale media is a potential enhancement factor for refrigeration technology in the future. For the forthcoming developments and progresses, experimental studies are invaluable in terms of having an insight and contributing to the establishment of infrastructure in the field in addi...
