This theses covers the preparation and the characterization of a rigid hydrogel from N-Vinyl pyrrolidone-methacrylic acid (VP-MAA) monomers and polyethyleneoxide (PEO) polymer. Hydrogels are hydrophillic natured three dimensional networks which can swell in the presence of water. The VP-MAA-PEO hydrogel was obtained by template polymerization which can be defined as a method of polymer synthesis in which specific interactions consists of the preparation of a polymer (daughter polymer) in the presence of a macromolecular compound (template polymer). The hydrogel of VP-MAA-PEO was synthesized by using azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator, tetrahydrofurane (THF) as the solvent and the temperature of the system was kept constant at 50ðC. Two kinds of VP-MAA-PEO hydrogels were prepared. The only difference between them were their solubilities in water. This difference is due to different crosslinking agent weight percentages of ethylene glycol dimethacrylic (EGDMA) to make the hydrogel water insoluble. The comparison of two hydrogels were carried by swelling behaviors at different pH values and different temperatures. Thermal stability of these two hydrogels were also examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), spectroscopic properties were compared by using FTIR spectrometer and morphological studies were analyzed by using scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Synthesis and characterization of a polybenzoxazine from a difunctional amine and a trifunctional phenol
Kaya, Şafak; Tinçer, Teoman; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
Synthesis of a polymer with benzoxazine units in the main chain backbone by a trifunctional phenol, a difunctional amine, and paraformaldehyde was achieved. Thermal, mechanical and spectroscopic characterization and the viscosity properties of the synthesized polymer were studied. In the first step of this study, a fast and feasible method for the synthesis of the benzoxazine precursors was developed since some methods mentioned in the literature about the synthesis of the benzoxazine derivatives last long ...
Pyrolysis mass spectrometric analysis of copolymer of polyacrylonitrile and polythiophene
Oğuz, Gülcan; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2004)
In the first part of this work, the structural and thermal characteristics of polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylonitrile films treated under the electrolysis conditions in the absence of thiophene, polythiophene and the mechanical mixture and a conducting copolymer of polyacrylonitrile/polythiophene have been studied by pyrolysis mass spectrometry technique. The thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile occurs in three steps; evolution of HCN, monomer, low molecular weight oligomers due to random chain cleavages a...
Synthesis of conducting block copolymers and their use in the immobilization of invertase and polyphenol oxidase enzyme
Kıralp, Senem; Kıralp, Senem; Department of Chemistry (2004)
A new thiophene derivative containing menthyl group (MM) was synthesized and polymerized via chemical and electrochemical methods. Polymers obtained and MM itself were used to synthesize copolymers with pyrrole under conditions of constant potential electrolysis. Cyclic Voltammetry, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy analyses were performed for the characterization of samples. Immobilization of invertase and polyphenol oxidase enzymes was performed in the matrices obtained via copolymerizatio...
Activity analysis of immobilized tyrosinase in the presence of different inhibitors
Narlı, Işıl; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2006)
Immobilization of tyrosinase enzyme was performed in the matrices obtained via copolymerization of terephthalic acid bis-(2-thiophen-3-yl ethyl) ester (TATE) with pyrrole. During electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, enzyme molecules were entrapped in the copolymer matrice. Activity measurements were performed by using Besthorn̕s Hydrazone method which includes spectrophotometric analysis of quinones produced by the enzyme. Enzyme electrodes were characterized in terms of maximum reaction rate (Vmax) a...
Flame retardancy of polyamide compounds and micro/nano composites
Gündüz, Hüseyin Özgür; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
In the first part of this dissertation, glass fiber reinforced/unreinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 66 (PA66) were compounded with three different flame retardants, which were melamine cyanurate, red phosphorus and brominated epoxy with antimony trioxide, by using an industrial scale twin screw extruder. Then, to investigate flame retardancy of these specimens, UL-94, Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) and Mass Loss Cone Calorimeter (MLC) tests were carried out. In addition to flammability tests, thermogra...
