The consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants are known to be associated with a long life span and low incidence of oxidative stress related diseases such as Alzheimer̕s, Parkinson̕s, cancer, aging and cardiovascular diseases. Fitotherapeutic effects of medicinal plants is virtually attributable to their phenolic compounds with low cytotoxicity. In this study, plants used in Anatolian folk medicine for their effects such as antiinflammatory, antiulcer, antipyretic, fertility, analgesic and aphrodisiac, namely Aesculus hippocastanum L., Papaver bracteatum L., Urtica urens L., Gundelia tournefortii L., Prangos ferulacea L., Chaerophyllum macropodum Boiss., Heracleum persicum Desf., Allium vineale L., Aconitum cochleare Woroschin, Rheum ribes L., Ferula rigidula DC., Rosa heckeliana Tratt, were screened for their antioxidative effects. Antioxidant characteristics of the specified plants were studied using lipid peroxidation inhibiton and DPPH radical scavenging methods. Total phenolics content and their effects on glutathione-S-transferase activity of the plants were further investigated. Rheum ribes L, Ferula rigidula DC, Rosa heckeliana Tratt., Prangos ferulacea L. were found to be very effective antioxidants and also effective inhibitors for glutathione-S-transferase activities among the plants. Rosa heckeliana Tratt. root extracts exhibited very high total phenolics content (0.7 mg/mg of extract) and antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 11.2 æg/mL and 5.1 æg/mL for DPPH scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition, respectively. Ferula rigidula DC was identified as the most potent inhibitor for glutathione-S-transferase activity, with IC50 values of 49 æg/mL.

Characterization of liposomal celecoxib formulation as a drug delivery system in colorectal cancer cell lines
Erdoğ, Aslı; Banerjee, Sreeparna; Department of Biotechnology (2012)
Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most common cancers and is the leading cause of cancer deaths in much of the developed world. Owing to the high incidence of drug resistance and potential toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs, much research is currently underway to design better strategies for smart drug delivery systems. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) pathway is associated with poor prognosis in colon carcinomas. The selective COX-2 inhibitor drug Celecoxib (CLX) has been shown to posses COX-2 independent ...
Microarray based expression profiling of barley under boron stress and cloning of 3H boron tolerance gene
Öz, Mehmet Tufan; Eyidoğan, Füsun; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; Department of Biotechnology (2012)
Both deficiency and toxicity of the essential micronutrient boron (B) lead to reduced crop yield in agriculture. However, our understanding of the molecular responses of plants under B stresses to tackle the yield loss is limited. Therefore, in the present study, transcriptional alterations in sensitive and tolerant barley cultivars under B deficiency and toxicity were investigated in order to reveal the molecular responses. Transcriptomes were monitored at seedling stage by global expression profiling usin...
Antioxidant activities of Salvia fructosa and its effects on HT 29 cell line

Many epidemiological studies have revealed that there is a strong correlation between consumption of polyphenol-rich foods or beverages and the prevention of certain diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases and aging. Phenolic compounds are abundant in all plants, therefore they form an integral part of the human diet. Salvia species, commonly known as sage, have been used since ancient times for more than 60 different ailments ranging from aches to epilepsy. There are around 900 species of Salvia,...
Evaluation and discrimination of simvastatin-induced structural alterations in proteins of different rat tissues by FTIR spectroscopy and neural network analysis

Statins are commonly used to control hypercholesterolemia and to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Among the statins, Simvastatin is one of the most frequently prescribed statins because of its efficacy in reducing LDL lipoprotein cholesterol levels, its tolerability, and its reduction of cardiovascular risk and mortality. Conflicting results have been reported with regard to benefits (pleiotropic effects) as well as risks (adverse effects) of simvastatin on different soft and hard tissues. In the current st...
Development of a solid-phase microextraction LC-MS/MS method for determination of oxidative stress biomarkers in biofluids

Recently the connection between oxidative stress and various diseases, including cancer and Alzheimer's, attracts notice as a pathway suitable for diagnostic purposes. 8-Oxo-deoxyguanosine and 8-oxo-deoxyadenosine produced from the interaction of reactive oxygen species with DNA become prominent as biomarkers. Several methods have been developed for their determination in biofluids, including solid-phase extraction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. However, still, there is a need for reliable and fast...
