Tabibi, Baharak
This thesis studies the influential role of architectural exhibitions in shaping and directing architectural discourses. The study accepts architectural exhibitions and associated publications as the أcritical actؤ of architecture, in which (the work of) architecture is interpreted, reproduced and publicized. The main focus of this thesis is أModern Architecture: International Exhibition,ؤ held in 1932 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This particular exhibition is a significant historical event, which officially announced architecture of the early 20th century as أInternational Style.ؤ The thesis underlines the role of the 1932 exhibition and MoMA as an architectural media in reproducing the works of architecture and reformulating the agenda of 20th century modern architecture especially in U.S.A.

Awarding architecture in Turkey: national architecture exhibition and awards program
Durmaz, Nur; Balamir, Aydan; Department of Architecture (2009)
The establishment of the National Architecture Exhibition and Awards (NAEA) program in 1987, by Chamber of Architects, coincides with the period of dissolving modernist paradigm and rising pluralist influences in Turkey. The program, as a critical medium, is expected to reflect “national” architectural practice and contribute in the “contemporary” architectural practice in Turkey. In order to evaluate the consistencies with these objectives, firstly the program identity and then the participations are analy...
Analysis of the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals
Bakht, Nazlı; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Department of Architecture (2007)
This study aims to analyze the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals within architectural media that shape today’s architectural production. This aim is accomplished in three sections; “examining the power of image in architecture”; “examining architectural media” and “examining the periodicals’ attitudes towards using architectural photography”. A case study is done to uncover the relationship between the photograph and the medium that it takes place on and determine ...
Authentication of space: the photograph as a raw material for architectural production
Koca, Aslı; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2009)
This thesis is a critical reconsideration of the relationship of architectural production with its unique mode of representation: “photography.” Photography has been interpreted essentially as a technique and a visual medium to document architecture in general. The “photograph,” in this sense, is regarded as a representational form of documentation and an artistic and material expression of architecture. Besides this conventional value, this study argues that photography not only provides a new medium for t...
Diagrammatic potency of the "nine square grid" in architectural design
Kalfazade, Nihat; Gür, Berin Fatma; Department of Architecture (2004)
The aim of this thesis is to search for the diagrammatic potency of the أnine square gridؤ (9SG) in architectural design. The thesis refers to the diagram as a tool for bringing order to the essential elements of architecture (i.e. program, structure and context). It highlights the potential relationships among these elements. In this study, the 9SG is approached as a diagram that has the potential to generate different spatial relations. The thesis investigates different uses of the 9SG in reference to the...
Exhibition space as the site of isolation, unification, and transformation
Özkal, Güneş; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2006)
This thesis re-evaluates the exhibition space as a site of “indeterminacy” defined by the dialectical interaction of architectural space and art object. The ways in which different forms of space-object interactions are constructed, and the architectural tools used to accommodate the exhibition event will be the departure points of this investigation. In this respect, the cases of Dia Beacon, Tate Modern and Stazione Leopolda will be analyzed and the means of “indeterminacy” will be elucidated by using the ...
