The purpose of this study is twofold: to assess the relationships among factors negatively affecting communication process in Turkish state universities and to test a hypothetical model drawn from a qualitative case study done by Gizir (1999). The sample of the study consisted of 480 faculty members employed in seven public universities representing seven regions of Turkey. As an instrument, أInventory of Communication Analysis in Academic Contextؤ, which was developed by the researcher by using the qualitative data obtained from a study done by Gizir (1999), was used in the present study. Structural equation modelling was used to analyze the data. The results of the present study revealed that there were direct and indirect relationships between each of the nine factors and poor communication, and among nine factors. The results also showed that there were some similarities and differences between the hypothetical model and the modified model.

Analysis of a Content-based Needs Assessment Survey for Physics Teachers
OKTAY, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali (Hacettepe University, 2020-04-01)
The purpose of the study is to develop and analyze a content-based needs assessment survey for physics teachers. With this aim, a Teacher Survey on the Nature of Physics (TSNOP) was developed as a measurement instrument for the study. The TSNOP was used to identify inservice physics teachers' needs, wishes, expectations and problems for the Nature of Physics (NOP) unit of a Professional Development Program (PDP). A total of 60 inservice physics teachers participated in the study. TSNOP includes four specifi...
The Contribution of Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategy Use to Students Science Achievement
Akyol, Gülsüm; Öztekin, Ceren; Sungur, Semra (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
This study examined the differences in the level of 7th-grade Turkish students' cognitive and metacognitive strategy use (rehearsal, elaboration, organization, critical thinking, and metacognitive self-regulation) in science and investigated the contribution of cognitive and metacognitive strategy use to students' science achievement. The present study also explored the relationships between students' background characteristics (gender, prior knowledge, socioeconomic status) and their cognitive and metacogn...
Content analysis of selected features of K-8 environmental education research studies in Turkey, 1997-2007
Erdogan, Mehmet; Marcinkowski, Tom; Ok, Ahmet (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
This study aimed to analyze environmental education research (EER) in Turkey conducted in Grades K-8 and published over the years 1997-2007. Due to the fact that there had been no systematic reviews of EER in Turkey prior to this time period, it was more appropriate to explore the implications of the results of this review for research policies and practices than for educational policies and practices in Grades K-8. A substantial search of the international and national literature revealed 53 studies that f...
Relationship between Turkish elementary science teachers occupational well being and some contextual and demographic characteristics A multivariate analysis
YERDELEN, SÜNDÜS; Sungur, Semra; KLASSEN, Robert (Turkish Education Association, 2016-01-01)
The purpose of this study was twofold: first, to determine the Turkish elementary science teachers' occupational well-being profile and second, to investigate the relation of science teachers' occupational well-being to some contextual and demographic characteristics. The contextual variables included class size, years of teaching experience and weekly course hours, while demographic characteristics included gender, graduated faculty, marital status, and having children. Moreover, occupational wellbeing was...
Socioeconomic Development and the Status of Elderly Men in Turkey: a Test of Modernization Theory
Gilleard, Christopher John; Gürkan, Ali Arslan (Oxford University Press (OUP), 1987-7-1)
The aim of this study was to test the predictions of modernization theory concerning the relationship between socioeconomic development and the status of elderly men in Turkish society. Using data derived from Turkish provincial census returns for 1980 and related material, we performed a series of principal component (pc) regression analyses on the data. The results indicated that a greater proportion of elderly men were classified as “head of household” in provinces characterized by low levels of urbaniza...
