Surface preparation is the key factor in determining the success of a protective coating system and its ultimate objective is to create proper adhesion of a coating over an underlying substrate. Abrasive blast cleaning involves mechanical cleaning by the continuous impact of abrasive particles at high velocities on to the substrate in a jet stream of compressed air. Industries that use abrasive blasting include the shipbuilding industry, automotive industry, and other industries that involve surface preparation and painting. Materials from different origins can be used as a blasting media including coal slag, smelter slag, mineral abrasives, metallic abrasives, and synthetic abrasives. Purpose of this thesis is to investigate the usability of industrial wastes (coal slag, smelter slags, etc.) of Turkey as abrasives in surface preparation technologies. Four different slag samples of three sources, namely coal furnace slag sample from Çayırhan thermal power plant, ferrochrome slag sample from Eti Krom A.Ş., granulated blast furnace and converter slag sample from Ereğli Iron and Steel Works were studied within the scope of this thesis work. The samples were prepared by crushing and screening. The chemical composition and physical characteristics of the samples were determined. All the samples were tested in industrial scale. Test results showed that the converter slag meet all the specifications for abrasives and it can be used in blast cleaning operations. However, coal furnace slag, granulated blast furnace slag and ferrochrome slag are not suitable to be used as abrasive in surface preparation technologies.

Yb-123 superconducting film coating on Gd2O3 buffered nickel substrate by sol-gel method
Okuyucu, H; Hascicek, Y; Karakaya, I (2004-01-01)
Surface coated Yb-123 superconductor was produced by a non-vacuum sol-gel technique. Nickel tape, which was used as substrate, was annealed in reducing atmosphere to get texture. To prevent Ni reaction with Yb-123 and transfer the texture to superconductor layer, Gd2O3 buffer layer was coated on Ni tape by sol-gel method. Yb-123 was coated on top of buffer layer by using non-vacuum sol-gel technique. Crystallographic and surface properties of Ni tape, buffer layer and the superconductor film were examined b...

Influence of rock properties and environmentalconditions on adhesive bond to a thin liner
Öztürk, Hasan (2003-08-26)
Adhesion test results are presented as part of an initial examination of the effect of a variety of intrinsic rock properties and environment conditions that influence the adhesive bond between rock and a thin liner. The liner material used for these tests was Tekflex, provided by FosRoc. Some of the variables examined include: rock strength (tensile/compressive strength) rock mineralogy, rock surface roughness (grain size, fracture/joint roughness), surface contamination (oil or dust), and curing environme...
Nanocrystal silicon based visible light emitting pin diodes
Anutgan, Mustafa; Katırcıoğlu, Bayram; Department of Physics (2010)
The production of low cost, large area display systems requires a light emitting material compatible with the standard silicon (Si) based complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The crystalline bulk Si is an indirect band semiconductor with very poor optical properties. On the other hand, hydrogenated amorphous Si (a-Si:H) based wide gap alloys exhibit strong visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature, owing to the release of the momentum conservation law. Still, the electrolumine...
Use of maleic anhydride compatibilization to improve toughness and other properties of polylactide blended with thermoplastic elastomers
Kaynak, Cevdet (2014-12-01)
Polylactide (PLA) being a very brittle biopolymer could be toughened by blending with thermoplastic elastomers such as thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) and thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPE); unfortunately, these blends are immiscible forming round domains in the PLA matrix. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using maleic anhydride (MA) compatibilization on the toughness and other properties of PLA blended with TPU and TPE. MA grafting on the PLA backbone (...
