This thesis focuses on Medical Infrared Imaging. It deals with the implementation of an infrared imaging system that can be used as a thermograph. A user interface program is also signed in order to control the imaging system. The system is implemented using Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Description Language (VHDL). Digitizing the data is implemented by Field Programmable Gate Array. Non-uniformities at the detector data are corrected by the two-point correction algorithm. To obtain absolute temperature readings, another system calibration process is also performed. Real-time histogram equalization algorithm and a realtime convolution operation are implemented using the VHDL. Tests of these implementations are performed by comparing the results with the numerical values. A user interface program is developed to allow the operator select any filter type and measure the temperature of any point in the object. Previous studies showed that an infrared system should detect a temperature difference of 500°mK if it is to be used for biomedical applications. Using a black body system with a precise temperature control, it is shown that this specification is satisfied. Clinical evaluations for a few patients reveal that the implemented medical infrared system can be used for biomedical applications.

Visual inspection of pharmaceutical color tablets
Aktürk, Deniz; Demirbaş, Kerim; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2006)
In this work a machine vision system for inspecting pharmaceutical color tablets is presented and implemented. Nonparametric clustering based segmentation is faster and thus more appropriate for real-time applications. Two nonparametric clustering based methods, Nearest Neighbor algorithm and MaxShift algorithm are worked in RGB and HSV color spaces as the segmentation step. The implemented algorithm allows the system to detect the missing and broken tablets, tablet fragments, and the color, size, and shape...
Advanced readout and control electronics for mems gyroscopes
Temiz, Yüksel; Akın, Tayfun; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
This thesis reports the development of advanced readout and control electronics for MEMS gyroscopes developed at METU. These gyroscope electronics are separated into three main groups: high sensitive interface circuits, drive mode amplitude controlled self oscillation loops, and sense mode phase sensitive amplitude demodulators. The proposed circuits are first implemented with discrete components, and then integrated on CMOS chips. A self oscillation loop enabling constant amplitude drive mode vibrations in...
Removal of baseline wandering from the electrocardiogram
Tanrıverdi, Volkan; Serinağaoğlu Doğrusöz, Yeşim; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2006)
ECG measures electrical potentials on the body surface via contact electrodes. Conditions such as movement of the patient, breathing, and interaction between the electrodes and skin cause baseline wandering of the ECG signal. Baseline wandering noise can mask some important features of the ECG signal; hence it is desirable to remove this noise for proper analysis of the ECG signal. This study includes an implementation and evaluation of methods to remove this noise, such as finite impulse response filters, ...
A new high voltage partial discharge indicator system
Gül, İbrahim Oğuz; Hızal, Mirzahan; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2006)
In this thesis work, a new partial discharge magnitude indicator with LCD display was designed. This system was implemented in high voltage partial discharge detection and measurement systems. AVRISP In-System programmer is used to program the microprocessors used inside the display unit. The time resolution of the system (one pixel of the display unit) is 4 microseconds. The unit is capable of counting the number of impulses of the input voltage that is coming from the high voltage system within user selec...
Parameter extraction and image enhancement for catadioptric omnidirectional cameras
Baştanlar, Yalın; Çetin, Yasemin; Department of Information Systems (2005)
In this thesis, catadioptric omnidirectional imaging systems are analyzed in detail. Omnidirectional image (ODI) formation characteristics of different camera-mirror configurations are examined and geometrical relations for panoramic and perspective image generation with common mirror types are summarized. A method is developed to determine the unknown parameters of a hyperboloidal-mirrored system using the world coordinates of a set of points and their corresponding image points on the ODI. A linear relati...
