The purpose of this study was to analyze geometry problems in a widely used sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade Turkish elementary mathematics textbooks series based on the cognitive assessment frameworks of the most recent TIMSS, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2003. To compare geometry problems in the textbooks and TIMSS 1999, in which Turkish students poorly performed, the cognitive behaviors that the problems required were determined and categorized. After the analysis, it was found that the two most frequent behaviors that the problems require are computing and applying with a total percentage of 72, in case of the textbooks. In TIMSS 1999 geometry problems case, however, applying and analyzing are the most frequent cognitive behaviors with a total percentage of 47. It was also found that a great majority of 22 behaviors of the framework were either not represented or underrepresented by the textbooks geometry problems. When we consider the four major categories of behaviors, 86 percent of the textbooks geometry problems required behaviors belong to two cognitive domains: Knowing Facts and Procedures or Solving Routine Problems. TIMSS 1999 geometry problems, however, mostly belong to Solving Routine Problems or Reasoning with a percentage of 65. In both the textbooks and TIMSS 1999 cases, a relatively small part of the problems required behaviors belong to Using Concepts. The results are discussed in the light of Turkey’s performance in TIMSS 1999 and some suggestions related to the textbook problems were given.

A study on pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge regarding the multiplication and division of fractions
Işıksal, Mine; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2006)
The purpose of this study was to examine pre-service mathematics teachers’ subject matter knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and the relationships between the two on multiplication and division of fractions. For this purpose, pre-service teachers’ understanding of key facts, concepts, principles, and proofs, their knowledge on common (mis)conceptions and difficulties held by the elementary students, their strategies of teaching these concepts, and representations they use to reason their understandin...
Exploring secondary mathematics teachers’ conceptions of mathematical literacy
Genç, Murat; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2017)
The purpose of this research study was to investigate secondary mathematics teachers’ conceptions of mathematical literacy. In doing so, the following three crucial interrelated issues were addressed: (i) teachers’ conceptions of what the notion of mathematical literacy means, (ii) teachers’ conceptions of how the development of mathematical literacy could be facilitated, and (iii) teachers’ conceptions of what a mathematics curriculum emphasizing mathematical literacy should look like. The data gathered fo...
Investigating Sources of Pre Service Teachers Self Efficacy For Preparing And Implementing Mathematical Tasks
YÜREKLİ, BİLGE; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (2015-02-04)
The goal of this study was to understand pre-service teachers' self-efficacy beliefs for preparing and implementing mathematical tasks and to explore which sources of self-efficacy they wighted and interpreted when judging their capabilities as a result of attending a mathematics teaching methods course designed with a focus on mathematics teaching through tasks. Nine pre-service teachers participated in this study and they were interviewed at the end of the methods course. Findings revealed that methods co...
An investigation of mathematics anxiety among sixth through eighth grade students in Turkey
Birgin, Osman; Baloğlu, Mustafa; Catlioglu, Hakan; Gurbuz, Ramazan (2010-12-01)
The purpose of the present study is to investigate mathematics anxiety among 220 sixth through eighth grade Turkish students in terms of mathematics achievement levels, perceived enjoyment of the mathematics teaching method, perceived enjoyment of mathematics, and perceived help with mathematics from parents. The Mathematics Anxiety Scale for Primary School Students (Bindak, 2005) was used to assess the levels of mathematics anxiety. A 3 x 2 factorial analysis of variance results showed that there was not a...
A Review of Research in Turkey on Beliefs about Teaching
Cobanoglu, Rahime (2015-01-01)
The primary objective of this study was to portray a synthesis of educational research in Turkey as regards pre-service and in-service teachers' beliefs about teaching. For this end, a comprehensive literature search that was confined to the years between 2000 and 2011 was conducted via electronic databases. This search generated thirty-one research articles that were considered relevant for the scope of the present review. Descriptive analysis of the findings in these studies resulted in four main themes t...
