Nickel extraction from Gördes laterites by hydrochloric acid leaching

Göveli, Ahmet
Leaching is the most widely used process for extraction of nickel metal from lateritic ores. In this study, nickel extraction from Manisa-Gördes region laterites by hydrochloric acid leaching is aimed. The mineralogical analysis of sample showed that hematite, goethite, dolomite, quartz and smectite are the main minerals in the ore. Attrition scrubbing, cycloning and magnetic separation with permroll were used as preconcentration processes but results were unsatisfactory. HCl leaching experiments were conducted both at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. The effects of various parameters such as leaching duration, particle size, concentration of HCl, pulp density, Cl- concentration and temperature on nickel recovery were examined. The results showed that under the optimised leaching conditions (particle size: 100 % -1 mm, HCl concentration: 3 N, leaching duration: 3 hours, leaching temperature: 100 oC, pulp density: 1/30 solid to liquid ratio by volume) it was possible to extract 87.26 % of nickel in the ore

First principles investigation of hydrogen storage in intermetallic systems
Kınacı, Alper; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2007)
The design and production of efficient metal-hydrides for hydrogen storage is a long standing subject. Over the years, many different types of intermetallic hydride systems were studied and some of them came out to be operable. However, none of them meet all the storage criteria perfectly. In this study, total energies, hydrogen storage capacity and stability of AB (A = Al, Be, Cu, Fe, Ni, Sb, V and B = Ti) type intermetallics were investigated with the goal of spotting a potential hydrogen storage material...
Composite slabs with expanded metal used as metal decking
Keyder, E; Tengirsenk, O (2000-06-02)
The feasibility of the use of expanded metal as metal decking in reinforced concrete slabs was investigated experimentally. 8 specimens either flat or having different corrugation geometries were tested. Flat or corrugated geometry of the specimen, strong or weak axis of expanded metal were chosen to be the variables of the test program. It was observed that the material develops excellent bond:with concrete and cracking takes place at significantly high load levels. Finite element models were set up and no...
Surface energy and excess charge in (1x2)-reconstructed rutile TiO2(110) from DFT plus U calculations
Unal, Hatice; METE, ERSEN; Ellialtıoğlu, Süleyman Şinasi (2011-09-09)
Physically reasonable electronic structures of reconstructed rutile TiO2(110)-(1x2) surfaces were studied using density functional theory (DFT) supplemented with Hubbard U on-site Coulomb repulsion acting on the d electrons, the so called DFT + U approach. Two leading reconstruction models proposed by Onishi and Iwasawa [Surf. Sci. Lett. 313, 783 (1994)] and Park and coworkers [Phys. Rev. B 75, 245415 (2007)] were compared in terms of their thermodynamic stabilities.
Synthesis of tin oxide-coated gold nanostars and evaluation of their surface-enhanced Raman scattering activities
Elcı, Aylin; Demırtas, Ozge; Öztürk, İbrahim Murat; Bek, Alpan; Nalbant Esentürk, Emren (2018-12-01)
Tin oxide-coated gold nanostar hybrid nanostructures are prepared by first synthesizing gold nanostars (ca. 400nm), then introducing Na2SnO3 precursor followed by its hydrolysis and formation of a tin oxide layer on nanoparticle surface. The synthesized hybrid structures have been characterized by combination of UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray studies, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectr...
Synthesis of benzotriazole bearing donor acceptor type electroactive monomers towards high optical contrast and fast switching electrochromic materials
Balan, Abidin; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2009)
Synthesis of new electroactive monomers are highly desired since these compounds can be utilized as active layers in many device applications such as ECDs, LEDs and solar cells. EDOT (3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) and thiophene bearing polymers were also proven to be excellent candidates as electrochromic materials. Benzotriazole can be coupled to EDOT and thiophene to yield materials that can be polymerized to give donor acceptor type polymers. These materials are promising candidates as components in fast s...
