The objective of this thesis is to reveal the perception of the Turkish contractors toward ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environmental and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems using questionnaires. All of the companies participating in the survey have already been ISO 9000 certified. Thus, the questionnaire prepared included more details for the Quality Management System. The results of the questionnaire outcomes are statistically analysed. Analysis of the survey results show that the most common motivators of Management Systems for Turkish contractors are to qualify to tender for local and international projects and to increase competitiveness in overseas markets, however the vision approach of top management is not less important than the financial issues. Most of the companies stated that they implement Management Systems as a part of their improvement strategy as well. This proves that the companies are aware of the benefits of certification in the long term period. Although the most expected advantages of the systems are qualification to tender for projects both locally and internationally, as well as gaining competitive advantage, it has been observed that other benefits are realizedby the Turkish contractors such as; more systematic record keeping, higher company prestige, increased client satisfaction. The major disadvantages realized by practicing the Management Systems are increased documentation and workload. The solution is proposed as to set an internal network and to integrate the systems to reduce paperwork. In conclusion, all of the Management Systems were believed to be as useful tools and Turkish contractors think that their advantages overcome disadvantages.

Occupational accidents and diseases in turkish construction industry
Taşyürek, Yunus Emre; Gündüz, Murat; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
The aim of this thesis is to determine the state of occupational health and safety of the construction industry among other industries in Turkey. For this purpose, data such as the number of occupational diseases, the number of occupational injuries, the number of cases of permanent incapacity to work and the number of fatal occupational injuries in each industry are derived from official sources. The comparison of the construction industry with other industries in terms of occupational health and safety is...
A generic risk and vulnerability assessment framework for international construction projects
Özcan, Gülbin; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
Project Risk Management (PRM) comprises of identification and assessment, analysis and mitigation of risk factors in order to meet the project objectives. Risk identification and assessment process has the greatest importance as the risk models are constructed based on previously defined risk sources and their interrelations. Although previous studies have concentrated on the relation between risk events and their consequences, the link between them must be modeled by considering the various chains of risk ...
Developing a methodology for the design of water distribution networks using genetic algorithm
Gençoğlu, Gençer; Merzi, Nuri; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
The realization of planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of water supply systems pictures one of the largest infrastructure projects of municipalities; water distribution networks should be designed very meticulously. Genetic algorithm is an optimization method that is based on natural evolution and is used for the optimization of water distribution networks. Genetic algorithm is comprised of operators and the operators affect the performance of the algorithm. Although these operators ar...
Main seismological features of recently compiled Turkish strong motion database
Erdoğan, Özgür; Akkar, Sinan D.; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In this thesis it is aimed to compile the Turkish strong-motion database for its efficient use in earthquake engineering and strong-motion seismology related studies. Within this context, the Turkish strong-motion database is homogenized in terms of basic earthquake source parameters (e.g. magnitude, style-of-faulting) as well as site classes and different source-to-site distance metrics. As part of this objective, empirical relationships for different magnitude scales are presented for further harmonizatio...
Development of a risk management decision support system for intarnational construction projects
Arıkan, Arif Erdem; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
It is agreed upon by many researchers that, although risk management (RM) is accepted as one of the critical success factors for construction projects, project participants generally do not have sufficient knowledge pertinent to risk management concept and the number of risk management support tools which facilitate the process is rather low. In order to facilitate risk management activities, decision support tools that will enable risk identification, analysis and response strategy formulation should be de...
