We have designed and synthesized a bistable pseudo-rotaxane carrying a fluorescent boradiazaindacene (BODIPY) unit. The intensity of the emission signal is dependent on the position of the cucurbituril (CB7) unit over the axle component. Thus, pH modulated switching of the CB7 wheel is accompanied by significant changes in the emission spectrum. Additionally, a thiosulfate-sulfite-iodate oscillating reaction which generates large amplitude pH oscillations can be carried out in the same solution. In such a solution, in response to changing pH, the position of the wheel component seems to change without outside intervention.

Design and synthesis of new supramolecular building blocks based on oligo-bodıpy dyes
Bilgiç, Bora; Akkaya, Engin Umut; Department of Chemistry (2008)
We have designed and synthesized a fluorescent, self-assembled molecular square containing a highly fluorescent well known flurophore boradiazaindacene (BODIPY) dye. Pt(II) complexes were used to hold together BODIPY derivatives and give the right angle to form the square structure. Usage of BODIPY fluorophore is very important on such structures because its variety of superior properties. BODIPY is a well studied fluorophore in our group and it is known that this self assembled square can be easily modifie...
Novel molecular building blocks based on bodipy chromophore: applications in metallosupramolecular polymers and ion sensing
Büyükçakır, Onur; Akkaya, Engin Umut; Department of Chemistry (2008)
We have designed and synthesized boradiazaindacene (BODIPY) derivatives, appropriately functionalized for metal ion mediated supramolecular polymerization. Thus, ligands for 2- and 2,6-terpyridyl and bipyridyl functionalized BODIPY dyes were synthesized through Sonogashira couplings. These new fluorescent building blocks are responsive to metal ions in a stoichiometry dependent manner. Octahedral coordinating metal ions such as Zn(II), result in polymerization at a stoichiometry which corresponds to two ter...
Development of acyl anion precursors and their applications
Reis, Ömer; Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı; Department of Chemistry (2005)
This thesis presents the development of new acyl anion precursors and their applications. The main concern of this thesis was to make use of acyl anion precursors in catalytic bond forming reactions. Toward this aim, previously known cyanide ion catalyzed cleavage of benzils was investigated in scope and efficiency in unsymmetrical benzoin condensation. Although benzils were proved to be useful entities as acyl anion precursors in benzoin condensation, they suffer some major drawbacks. Therefore acylphospho...
Novel studies on the chemoenzymatic synthesis of polychlorinated bicyclic systems and the synthesis of C2 and C3 symmetric chiral ligands
Türkmen, Yunus Emre; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2006)
Optically active polychlorinated bicyclic systems are important starting materials for the synthesis of complex target molecules. In the first part of the study, the syntheses of several racemic and meso hexachloronorbornene derivatives were executed successfully, starting from hexachlorocyclopentadiene. The enantio-enriched acetoxymethyl derivative (-)-2 and the hemiester (-)-6 were synthesized in high e.e. values by using several hydrolase type enzymes. The absolute configuration of (-)-2 was determined b...
Extraordinary Modes of Bonding Enabled by the Triquinane Framework
Günbaş, Emrullah Görkem (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2013-10-04)
Incorporation of triquinane ring systems into a macrobicyclic framework enables the stabilization of unusual bonding arrangements, including 3-center-2-electron cation, 3-center-3-electron radical, and 3-center-4-electron anion systems, linear divalent fluorine, triplet carbenes, record short C-C bonds, a powerful proton sponge effect, and oxadionium (R4O2+) ions. The means to stabilize and conceivably isolate such species derives from the rigid, convex nature of the triquinane ring system, as well as the s...
