Clinical guidelines are developed to assist healthcare practitioners to make decisions on a patient's medical problems and as such they communicate with external applications to retrieve patient data, to initiate medical actions through clinical workflows and to transmit information to alert/reminder systems. The interoperability problems in the healthcare IT domain for interacting with heterogeneous clinical workflow systems and Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR) Systems prevent wider deployment of clinical guidelines because each deployment requires a tedious custom adaptation phase. In this thesis, we provide machine processable mechanisms that express the semantics of clinical guideline interfaces so that automated processes can be used to access the clinical resources for guideline deployment and execution. For this purpose, we propose a semantically enriched clinical guideline representation formalism by extending one of the computer interpretable guideline representation languages, GuideLine Interchange Format (GLIF). To be able to deploy the semantically extended guidelines to healthcare settings semi-automatically, the underlying application's semantics must also be available. We describe how this can be achieved based on two prominent implementation technologies in use in the eHealth domain: Integrating Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Cross Enterprise Document Sharing Integration Profile (XDS) for discovering and exchanging EHRs and Web service technology for interacting with the clinical workflows and wireless medical sensor devices. Since the deployment and execution architecture should be dynamic, and address the heterogeneity of underlying clinical environment, the deployment and execution is coordinated by a multi-agent system. The system described in this thesis is realized within the scope of the SAPHIRE Project.

Image segmentation with Improved region modeling
Ersoy, Ozan; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2004)
Image segmentation is an important research area in digital image processing with several applications in vision-guided autonomous robotics, product quality inspection, medical diagnosis, the analysis of remotely sensed images, etc. The aim of image segmentation can be defined as partitioning an image into homogeneous regions in terms of the features of pixels extracted from the image. Image segmentation methods can be classified into four main categories: 1) clustering methods, 2) region-based methods, 3) ...
Wireless Healthcare Monitoring with RFID-Enhanced Video Sensor Networks
Alemdar, Hande; Ersoy, Cem (SAGE Publications, 2010-01-01)
In pervasive healthcare systems, WSNs provide rich contextual information and alerting mechanisms against odd conditions with continuous monitoring. Furthermore, they minimize the need for caregivers and help the chronically ill and elderly to survive an independent life. In this paper, we propose an outdoor monitoring environment and evaluate the capabilities of video sensor networks for healthcare monitoring in an outdoor setting. The results exhibit that their capabilities are limited. For this reason, w...
Collaborative Business Process Support in eHealth: Integrating IHE Profiles Through ebXML Business Process Specification Language
Doğaç, Asuman; Kabak, Yildiray; Namli, Tuncay; Okcan, Alper (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2008-11-01)
Integrating healthcare enterprise (IHE) specifies integration profiles describing selected real world use cases to facilitate the interoperability of healthcare information resources. While realizing a complex real-world scenario, IHE profiles are combined by grouping the related IHE actors. Grouping IHE actors implies that the associated business processes (IHE profiles) that the actors are involved must be combined, that is, the choreography of the resulting collaborative business process must be determin...
Passive Haptic Interface with MR-Brakes for Dental Implant Surgery
Senkal, Doruk; Gurocak, Hakan; Konukseven, Erhan İlhan (MIT Press - Journals, 2011-06-01)
In this research a passive haptic interface is explored as a surgical aid for dental implant surgery. The placement of a dental implant is critical since positioning mistakes can lead to permanent damage in the nerves controlling the lips, long lasting numbness, and failure of the implant and the crown on it. Haptic feedback to the surgeon in real time can decrease dependence on the surgeon's skill and experience for accurate implant positioning and increase the overall safety of the procedure. The develope...
