Geology and joint analysis of the Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities of Cappadocia, Turkey

Mutlu, Mehmet Özgür
This thesis attempts to detect the ignimbrite units in which the underground cities were carved and the relationship between the joints in these ignimbrites and the walls of underground cities. Orientation of rooms, directions of walls and joints are input data used in the study. Two sites in Cappadocia (Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı) are selected to investigate the relationship. Measurements taken from 46 rooms of Derinkuyu and 64 rooms of Kaymaklı are analyzed for the room and joint directions, joint locations in the room and joint densities. The density analyses are also performed in the field for Kızılkaya and Gördeles ignimbrites. Conclusions derived from the analysis are: 1) Derinkuyu is carved within Kızılkaya and Kaymaklı is carved within Gördeles ignimbrite, 2) The thickness of Kızılkaya and Gördeles ignimbrites observed 13.5 and 34 m, respectively, in the field. The probable thickness of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities are 40 and 25 m, respectively, 3) The rooms and the joints are oriented arbitrarily, 4) Forming the room walls that are perpendicular to joints were not preferred, 5) The joint densities in Derinkuyu show ascending tendency, while the joint densities in Kaymaklı have descending tendency from top to ground floors, 6) The joint density of Kızılkaya in the field is higher than the joint density in Derinkuyu underground city. Similarly, the joint density of Gördeles in the field is higher than the density of Kaymaklı underground city, 7) The joint density of Kızılkaya ignimbrite is higher than Gördeles ignimbrite in both field and underground measurements.

Geological and morphological investigations of the underground cities of Cappadocia using GIS
Ayhan, Arda; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of rock types and morphologic classes on the locations of underground cities existing in Cappadocia. To achieve this purpose four databases are created that contain related information of underground cities, present settlements, rock types and morphologic classes. Four main analyses are carried out using the data created fort the study. These analyses are: 1) Distance analysis to determine the distances between underground cities and present settlements...
Post-paleocene deformation in Kalecik region, East of Ankara, Turkey
Kasımoğlu, Pınar; Rojay, Fuat Bora; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
In order to understand the tectonic evolution of the Kalecik region (Ankara, Turkey), a structural field study was performed in a selected area located in the east of Kalecik, where mostly imbricated thrust sheets of the Cretaceous Ophiolitic melange crop out. In the study area, the Cretaceous Ophiolitic melange, Cretaceous radiolaria-bearing sequences and the Paleocene units are all intruded by sub-vertical dykes. The attitudes of planar structures (dykes, beds and faults) and the kinematic data measured o...
Determination of the dynamic characteristics and local site conditions of the plio-quarternary sediments situated towards the north of Ankara through surface wave testing methods
Eker, Arif Mert; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2009)
The purpose of this study is to assess the engineering geological and geotechnical characteristics and to perform seismic hazard studies of the Upper Pliocene to Quaternary (Plio-Quaternary) deposits located towards the north of Ankara through surface wave testing methods. Based on a general engineering geological and seismic site characterization studies, site classification systems are assigned in seismic hazard assessments. The objective of the research is to determine the regional and local seismic soil...
Modeling and development of a groundwater management plan for Ulubey aquifer system, Uşak-Turkey
Ünsal Erdemli, Burcu; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2008)
The purpose of this study is the characterization and modeling of Ulubey aquifer system which serves as an important water supply for Uşak province located in inner parts of the Aegean Region in Turkey. In recent years, growing population, accelarating industrial activities and on the contrary decreasing rainfall and contamination of the surface water resources made groundwater indispensable to meet domestic, agricultural and industrial water demands of Uşak province. All these facts necessitate the develop...
Micropalentological analysis and sequence stratigraphy through upper tournaisian substage in Aladağ unit (Central Taurides, Turkey)
Dinç, Aksel Tuğba; Altıner, Demir; Department of Geological Engineering (2009)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Upper Tournaisian substage within the Carboniferous carbonate deposits of the Aladağ Unit in the Hadim region (Central Taurides) based on foraminiferal diversity and to study the meter scale cyclicity in order to explain the sequence stratigraphic evolution of the carbonate succession. In this study, a 27.01 m thick stratigraphic section consisting of limestones and shales was measured and 89 samples, collected along this section, were analyzed. Micropaleontol...
