There have been many examples of individual molecular logic gates and molecular equivalents of more complex digital designs in recent years such as half adder, half subtractor, multiplexer. Neverethless, the unresolved issues of addressability and lack of communication between logic gates remain to be the Achille’s heel for molecular logic gates. A few years ago we have demonstrated that appropriately decorated bodipy dyes can be very efficient generators for singlet oxygen, thus act as a satisfactory photodynamic agents. As a bonus, these dyes absorb very strongly at 660 nm which is considered to be within the therapeutic window of mammalian tissue. So, combining our earlier experience in molecular logic gates and rational design of photodynamic agents, we proposed a photodynamic therapy agent that would release singlet oxygen at a much larger rate when the cancer related cellular parameters are above a threshold value at the same location. Following the survey of the relevant literature for cancer related parameters, we decided that sodium ion concentration and pH (H+ concentration) could be very promising targets. In the tumor regions the pH can drop below 6 and the Na+ concentration is also significantly higher then normal tissues. As a result, in the proposed logic system the chemical inputs could be Na+ and H+. The system in fact is an automaton which is to seek higher concentration of both hydrogen and sodium ions, and release the toxic agent (singlet oxygen) only when both concentrations are high. Thus, the proposed logic gate is an AND logic gate, the output of which is singlet oxygen. Keywords: Photodynamic therapy, singlet oxygen, molecular logic gates, AND logic operation.

Synthesis and characterization of semiconductor thin films for photovoltaic applications
Tezel, Tamer; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Chemistry (2009)
Cadmium sulfide (CdS) thin films are very attractive materials due to their tunable optical properties and potential applications in not only photovoltaic devices but also in electronics, bio-labeling and fluorescence imaging. Recently, there is a great interest in flexible photovoltaic devices due to their unique properties such as very low weight, mechanical durability and large area applications. Organic semiconductors and their heterojunctions with inorganic materials are the most promising candidates f...
Synthesis of 1,4-Thiazepines
Kelgokmen, Yılmaz; Zora, Metin (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2018-08-03)
An efficient, general, and unprecedented methodology for the synthesis of 2-methylene-2,3-dihydro-1,4-thiazepines from N-propargylic beta-enaminones is described. Initially, N-propargylic beta-enaminones were thionated with Lawesson's reagent in good to high yields, and then the resulting N-propargylic beta-enaminothiones were subjected to electrophilic cyclization. When treated with zinc chloride in refluxing chloroform, Npropargylic beta-enaminothiones underwent electrophilic cyclization to yield 2-methyl...
Synthesis of novel chiral thiourea derivatives and their applications, synthesis of some hdac inhibitors, addition of acyl phosphonates to ethylcyanoformate
Sağlam, Gülüzar; Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı; Department of Chemistry (2008)
The thiourea derivatives have become a main focus of research in asymmetric synthesis as an organocatalyst in recent years. In the first part, the thiourea catalysts are synthesized starting from easily available L-tartaric acid and application of the catalysts to some addition reactions showed no significant asymmetric induction. A number of HDAC inhibitors have been developed as anti-cancer agent at the present time.In the second part, some aryl butenoic acid derivatives are synthesized as HDAC inhibitors...
Development of acyl anion precursors and their applications
Reis, Ömer; Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı; Department of Chemistry (2005)
This thesis presents the development of new acyl anion precursors and their applications. The main concern of this thesis was to make use of acyl anion precursors in catalytic bond forming reactions. Toward this aim, previously known cyanide ion catalyzed cleavage of benzils was investigated in scope and efficiency in unsymmetrical benzoin condensation. Although benzils were proved to be useful entities as acyl anion precursors in benzoin condensation, they suffer some major drawbacks. Therefore acylphospho...
Novel studies on the chemoenzymatic synthesis of polychlorinated bicyclic systems and the synthesis of C2 and C3 symmetric chiral ligands
Türkmen, Yunus Emre; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2006)
Optically active polychlorinated bicyclic systems are important starting materials for the synthesis of complex target molecules. In the first part of the study, the syntheses of several racemic and meso hexachloronorbornene derivatives were executed successfully, starting from hexachlorocyclopentadiene. The enantio-enriched acetoxymethyl derivative (-)-2 and the hemiester (-)-6 were synthesized in high e.e. values by using several hydrolase type enzymes. The absolute configuration of (-)-2 was determined b...
