Determination of the rock mass characteristics and support systems of the new Ulus Tunnel, Ankara

Aksular, Irem
The New Ulus Tunnel will be constructed within the andesitic terrain at Hıdırlıktepe (Ankara). Excavation of the tunnel will be accomplished through blast and drill method. Emprical methods will be consulted during the design of the support systems as well as the slope of the portal rock face. Therefore it is essential to perform detailed rock mass characterization studies. In this thesis it is aimed to determine the rock mass characteristics in order to design the rock slope of the portals and to assess the reliable support systems for the tunnel. For this purpose laboratory tests and field investigations were conducted. Field investigations involved detailed discontinuity measurements and borehole drillings. In respect of laboratory tests; point load index, unit weight and uniaxial compression strength tests were used. The field and laboratory test results were utilized in the Rock Mass Classification Systems (RMR, Q-system) in order to ascertain the rock mass characteristics. By all accounts, necessary tunnel support systems were determined. As for the portal areas, the rock face design was accomplished through kinematical analyses. Consequently, no failure is expected at the portal rock slopes.

Landfill site selection and landfill liner design for Ankara
Yal, Gözde Pınar; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
The main scope of this thesis is to select alternative landfill sites for Ankara based on the growing trends of Ankara towards the Sincan and Gölbaşı municipalities and to eventually select the best alternative. Landfill site selection was carried out utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) and Multi-Criteria-Decision-Analysis (MCDA). A number of criteria were gathered in a GIS environment. Each criterion was assigned a weight value by applying the Pairwise Comparison Method (PCM). “The Technique for ...
Determination of the dynamic characteristics and local site conditions of the plio-quarternary sediments situated towards the north of Ankara through surface wave testing methods
Eker, Arif Mert; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2009)
The purpose of this study is to assess the engineering geological and geotechnical characteristics and to perform seismic hazard studies of the Upper Pliocene to Quaternary (Plio-Quaternary) deposits located towards the north of Ankara through surface wave testing methods. Based on a general engineering geological and seismic site characterization studies, site classification systems are assigned in seismic hazard assessments. The objective of the research is to determine the regional and local seismic soil...
Investigation of rock slope stability for an abandoned limestone quarry in Konya Turkey
Kalpakçı, Volkan; Öztürk, Şevki; Topal, Tamer; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan (2016-06-12)
Slope stability problems were encountered in an abandoned quarry which is planned to be used as recreational area by the municipality of Selcuklu in Konya, Turkey. The rock in the quarry is primarily composed of micritic limestone which contains karstic cavities mainly controlled by joints. In order to assess the stability of the abandoned quarry, discontinuity survey, laboratory tests, kinematic and rock slope stability analyses were performed. Based on the analyses, planar and wedge failures as well as ro...
Modeling and development of a groundwater management plan for Ulubey aquifer system, Uşak-Turkey
Ünsal Erdemli, Burcu; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2008)
The purpose of this study is the characterization and modeling of Ulubey aquifer system which serves as an important water supply for Uşak province located in inner parts of the Aegean Region in Turkey. In recent years, growing population, accelarating industrial activities and on the contrary decreasing rainfall and contamination of the surface water resources made groundwater indispensable to meet domestic, agricultural and industrial water demands of Uşak province. All these facts necessitate the develop...
Post-paleocene deformation in Kalecik region, East of Ankara, Turkey
Kasımoğlu, Pınar; Rojay, Fuat Bora; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
In order to understand the tectonic evolution of the Kalecik region (Ankara, Turkey), a structural field study was performed in a selected area located in the east of Kalecik, where mostly imbricated thrust sheets of the Cretaceous Ophiolitic melange crop out. In the study area, the Cretaceous Ophiolitic melange, Cretaceous radiolaria-bearing sequences and the Paleocene units are all intruded by sub-vertical dykes. The attitudes of planar structures (dykes, beds and faults) and the kinematic data measured o...
