Slope stability problems were encountered in an abandoned quarry which is planned to be used as recreational area by the municipality of Selcuklu in Konya, Turkey. The rock in the quarry is primarily composed of micritic limestone which contains karstic cavities mainly controlled by joints. In order to assess the stability of the abandoned quarry, discontinuity survey, laboratory tests, kinematic and rock slope stability analyses were performed. Based on the analyses, planar and wedge failures as well as rockfall problems were identified. Possible remedial measures to be taken should consider the results of the analyses with existing project and environmental restrictions

Determination of the rock mass characteristics and support systems of the new Ulus Tunnel, Ankara
Aksular, Irem; Doyuran, Vedat; Department of Geological Engineering (2008)
The New Ulus Tunnel will be constructed within the andesitic terrain at Hıdırlıktepe (Ankara). Excavation of the tunnel will be accomplished through blast and drill method. Emprical methods will be consulted during the design of the support systems as well as the slope of the portal rock face. Therefore it is essential to perform detailed rock mass characterization studies. In this thesis it is aimed to determine the rock mass characteristics in order to design the rock slope of the portals and to assess th...
Assessment of water supply impacts for a mine site in Western Turkey
Ağartan, Elif; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
A certain amount of water is required for a mine site located in Turgutlu in Western Turkey to be used in mining processes. The purpose of this study is to assess the impacts associated with meeting water supply requirements for the mine. Scope of the study involves determination of the alternative water resources, the assessment of impacts associated with each resource and the selection of the most feasible alternative in the aspect of environmental and technical effects. Three alternatives suggested to su...
Modeling and development of a groundwater management plan for Ulubey aquifer system, Uşak-Turkey
Ünsal Erdemli, Burcu; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2008)
The purpose of this study is the characterization and modeling of Ulubey aquifer system which serves as an important water supply for Uşak province located in inner parts of the Aegean Region in Turkey. In recent years, growing population, accelarating industrial activities and on the contrary decreasing rainfall and contamination of the surface water resources made groundwater indispensable to meet domestic, agricultural and industrial water demands of Uşak province. All these facts necessitate the develop...
Determination of the dynamic characteristics and local site conditions of the plio-quarternary sediments situated towards the north of Ankara through surface wave testing methods
Eker, Arif Mert; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2009)
The purpose of this study is to assess the engineering geological and geotechnical characteristics and to perform seismic hazard studies of the Upper Pliocene to Quaternary (Plio-Quaternary) deposits located towards the north of Ankara through surface wave testing methods. Based on a general engineering geological and seismic site characterization studies, site classification systems are assigned in seismic hazard assessments. The objective of the research is to determine the regional and local seismic soil...
Assessment of rock slope stability along the proposed Ankara-Pozanti autoroad in Turkey
Avci, Km; Akgün, Haluk; Doyuran, Vedat (1999-01-01)
The main objective of this study is the determination of the slope stability and excavatability category of discontinuous rock exposed between 53 + 000 and 58 + 000 km of the proposed Ankara-Pozanti autoroad in Turkey to provide secure access. The-study area is mostly in the outcrops of highly jointed sandstone with minor layers of marl. This Maastrichtian-Eocene Group also contains conglomerate and limestone bands of flysch character called the Pasadag Group. Quaternary alluvial deposits occur throughout t...
