This study firstly aims to identify facility features of the convention centers and then propose a method in order to identify users’ priorities and evaluate what extent these were provided by the convention centre. Data has been collected using self-administered questionnaires from three group of users; attendees, employees and meeting planners. The study has been conducted in İstanbul Lütfi Kırdar Convention and Exhibition Center as a case, because of being the most remarkable convention center of Turkey. Each participant will be required to assess this convention center in terms of their priorities of expectations and features provided. The results have been evaluated statistically, and significant differences between the level of importance and performance of the facility features have been presented. This research is expected to be useful for constitution of design criteria of convention centers and effective management of the facilities, in terms of both identifying the features of convention centers and providing a method evaluating the performance of the facilities from the users’ perspective.

Urban convention hotel design criteria and a design proposal for Ankara case
Balıkcıoğlu, Gizem; Kural, İlhan; Department of Architecture (2004)
The aim of this study is to define the design criteria for urban convention hotels based on national and international market trends. The second aim is to design an efficient, flexible, and valid convention hotel program for Ankara case based on this research. The existing hotel structures in Ankara are assumed to be insufficient to meet the convention requirements of international and national market needs. In the study, the space requirements of different markets and their program matrix reflected on majo...
Architectural built form and public dialogue : an evaluation of public wall in its communicative role
Güçlü, Tuğba; Cengizkan, Ali; Department of Architecture (2006)
This thesis is a study on the interface of public built form and the open public space surrounding it. The aim is to explore the problem of the transition between interior and exterior public space, that is the exterior skin of the public built form: its public wall. Public wall is explored as an in-between element belonging to both spaces, which forms the dialogue of these spaces. The dialogue is studied in terms of communicative qualities. A conceptual framework is established for the analysis of the publ...
Assessing thermal performance of office building envelopes : a case study on energy efficiency
Sürmeli, Ayşe Neşen; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2004)
In this study, the energy conservation potential of selected retrofitting interventions on an office building were investigated, on the basis of which some rational strategies for the improvement of building envelopes in terms of energy, environment and comfort design were proposed. Examined were various measures on envelope constructions that can be retrofitted to existing buildings. By using simulation techniques, the effectiveness of such measures in reducing energy consumption and environmental threat w...
An assessment of the architectural representation process within the computational design environment
Uçar, Başak; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2006)
With the introduction of a computational design environment, architectural design and representation processes witness a radical transition from the analog to the digital medium, that may be asserted to initiate a paradigm shift affecting both. In this new design environment, extending the instrumentality of computer-aided processes to the generative use of computational tools and procedures, architectural design and representation processes are subject to mutual alterations, challenged with computational d...
Exploring the potential of mat-building for the creation of universally designed environments
Eren, Yasemin; Aközer, Emel; Department of Architecture (2004)
The goal of this study is to reread the strategies of formal organization in architecture, which are called أmat-buildingؤ and أmat-urbanismؤ, exploring their potential to contribute to the creation of universally designed built environments in the 21st century. The idea of mat-building was first delineated by Alison Smithson in 1974, in her article أHow to Recognize and Read Mat-Building,ؤ by means of its traditional and modern examples. The concept of universal design was first used in 1970̕s and reinterp...
