The main objective of this study was to investigate the removal and recovery of nutrients from anaerobic digestion residues of poultry manure through struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O, MAP) precipitation. To this purpose, three sets of laboratory experiments were conducted. In the first set, separate and co-digestion of poultry manure and sewage sludge were studied in laboratory-scale mesophilic anaerobic batch reactors and subsequent struvite precipitation experiments were conducted with the reactors effluents. The effects of important parameters on struvite precipitation were investigated and it is illustrated that up to 89 % of NH4-N, 84 % PO4-P and 42 % COD removals were possible. In the second set, the effluents of a full-scale co-digestion plant utilizing poultry manure and maize silage were subjected to struvite precipitation experiments. Acidic phosphorus-dissolution process was successfully applied to the solid phase effluents to obtain phosphorus-enriched solution. By the addition of external Mg and P more than 90% of NH4-N and PO4-P were recovered from phosphorus-enriched solution, whereas the addition of only Mg led to partial recovery of NH4-N. In the third set, the effluents of a full-scale poultry manure digester were subjected to struvite precipitation experiments. The findings illustrated that Ca has inhibitory effects on the struvite reaction and lead to formation of hydroxlyapatite and amorphous calcium phosphates together with struvite. Based on the results obtained in this study, it is postulated that, struvite precipitation is a viable option for the recovery of the nutrients in the anaerobically digested poultry manure. This study illustrated that, poultry manure, if managed properly, could meet one-fourth of Turkey’s domestic fertilizer demand.

Removal and recovery of nutrients as struvite from anaerobic digestion residues of poultry manure
Yılmazel Tokel, Yasemin Dilşad (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
The removal and the recovery of nutrients, namely nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from anaerobically digested and solid-liquid separated manure effluents via struvite precipitation were investigated. Both the liquid and the solid phases of the poultry manure digester effluent were subjected to struvite precipitation experiments. The Mg:N:P molar ratio of 1:1:1 in the liquid phase resulted in an average NH4-N removal efficiency of 86.4%, which increased to 97.4% by adjusting the Mg:N:P ratio to 1.5:1:1. The ...
Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure with enhanced ammonia removal
Uludag-Demirer, S.; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Frear, C.; Chen, S. (2008-01-01)
Poor ammonia-nitrogen removal in methanogenic anaerobic reactors digesting animal manure has been reported as an important disadvantage of anaerobic digestion (AD) in several studies. Development of anaerobic processes that are capable of producing reduced ammonia-nitrogen levels in their effluent is one of the areas where further research must be pursued if AD technology is to be made more effective and economically advantageous. One approach to removing ammonia from anaerobically digested effluents is the...
ENHANCEMENT OF BIOMETHANE PRODUCTION FROM CATTLE MANURE VIA GRANULAR ACTIVATED CARBON AMENDMENT
Odabaş, Yasin; Yılmazel Tokel, Yasemin Dilşad; Department of Environmental Engineering (2022-11)
In this study we investigated the impact of granular activated carbon (GAC) application on anaerobic digestion (AD) process of cattle manure. Firstly, the effect of the presence of basal medium on cattle manure digestion was evaluated. It was observed that basal medium addition decreased methane yield and increased lag time. Then, for the enhanced cattle manure digestion, a metal-based conductive material, hematite (Fe2O3), and carbon-based material, GAC, were amended into the reactors. From the comparison ...
Application of ADM1 model to a full-scale anaerobic digester under dynamic organic loading conditions
Ozkan-Yucel, U. G.; Gökçay, Celal Ferdi (2010-01-01)
The IWA Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) was used to simulate the full-scale anaerobic sludge digester of Ankara Central Wastewater Treatment Plant. The digester is a completely mixed, once through continuous flow type which is being fed with a primary and secondary sludge mixture. The variability and unpredicted nature of the primary sludge composition was expected to challenge the model. A one-year dynamic data set from the digester was used for model calibration and validation in the study. The sta...
Biorefining of sugar-beet processing wastes by anaerobic biotechnology: waste stabilization and bioproduct formation
Alkaya, Emrah; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
The main objective of this study was to investigate two of the possible exploitation routes of anaerobic digestion (acid-phase and methane-phase) for the treatment of sugar-beet processing wastes, while producing valuable biobased products. For this purpose, four sets of laboratory experiments were carried out in a stepwise fashion: First, in the biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay (Set-up 1) wastewater and beet-pulp were efficiently digested (63.787.3% COD removal and 69.689.3% VS reduction) in batch...
