Color is a significant architectural element, which is open to become a major representative element in the process of design. This study aims to understand the limits of using color as an architectural element and discuss the transformative effects of the use of color with respect to meaning and design levels of buildings. The study is composed of two main parts. In the first part limits of using color as a complementary and consequential part of design are discussed. The architectural understanding of color in the 20th century is utilized as the main ground for a contemporary case study. The case study in the second part uses residential buildings in Ankara as the main domain to understand the continuities and discontinuities between color preferences and architectural meaning. The method of the study is based on comparison of the facades of residential buildings of various contexts, scales, languages and typologies in five different categories. The first category is “The Figural Use of Color” which is constituted by decorated facades. “The Elemental Use of Color” is the second category based upon the continuity between tectonic elements of facade and color. The third is the “Material Color and Painting,” which is based upon the color representations of the natural material preferences supported by additional painting. “Tectonic Use of Color” as the fourth frame implies color brought by the nature of the material. The last category is “Monochromatic Use of Color” in which the facades are colored in a single hue or different lightness of the same hue.

Research by design in architectural design education
Yüncü, Onur; Aközer, Emel; Department of Architecture (2008)
Research by design refers to the design of architectural research as an integral part of architectural design processes. In 1980s, it emerged as a third way in design research that was dominated until then by the methods of natural sciences and humanities. With this new formulation of design research, a methodological and epistemological transformation occurs, leading to the integration of practical knowledge into architectural research. The primary epistemological question transforms from knowing what desi...
The role of design brief in urban design competitions
Kabal, Emre; Sargın, Güven Arif; Department of Architecture (2008)
Design brief is the descriptive and connective medium of design competitions. The main aim (design problem) of the design competition is explained by means of design brief which is setting up all needs and requirements or design program (specification) which is explaining the requirement list. The definition of design problem should be formulated to make clear statements in order to avoid misapprehensions by forming creative environment to enable creation of new ideas. The communication processes are compos...
‘‘Form’’ and ‘‘space’’ in Roman domestic architecture: the architectural language of the Atrium house
Şeker Ilgın, Ayşegül; Özgenel, Lale; Department of History of Architecture (2008)
This study investigates two significant components of architectural design, ‘‘form’’ and ‘‘space’’ and the basic design elements and principles used in their creation in the context of Roman domestic architecture. It more specifically examines how, by which means and for which purposes certain form and space defining tools such as the column, wall, floor, ceiling and opening with their architectural equivalents as the point, line, plane and volume were used in the atrium houses exemplified in Pompeii in Ita...

The thesis includes the historical background of Ormana, detailed descripti...
On urban architecture
Kömez, Esin; Aközer, Emel; Restoration in Department of Architecture (2009)
The term “urban architecture” has different meanings and is open to many interpretations. This thesis aims to highlight and further elaborate some definitions of “urban architecture” in which it is mainly characterized as architecture in the urban context. The Second Volume of Harvard Architecture Review on “Urban Architecture” is referred as a main source in discussing the content of the term. The concept of “urban architecture” can be identified in several theoretical contributions to the field of archite...
