This thesis is aimed at identifying the noise sources of a wheeled tractor to reduce the noise levels below the legislative limits by controlling noise sources through proper methodologies. The study focuses firstly on identifying the noise sources of a wheeled tractor by using proper noise source identification techniques. These techniques can be summarized as sound intensity measurements, sound power level determination studies and spectral analysis of the noise data acquired in the tests. Simple sound intensity mapping techniques are used and the intensity contour maps are generated to identify the noise sources. Most important and effective noise sources are identified and the critical noise sources are focused to apply appropriate noise control strategies not only at the prototype production stages but also at the early design stages. Consequently, upon consideration of both structure-borne and flow-induced noise, the pass-by noise level and the operator’ s ear noise levels of the tractor are reduced by nearly 3 dB (A) through application of proper noise control strategies.

Modeling and experimental evaluation of variable speed pump and valve controlled hydraulic servo drives
Çalışkan, Hakan; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
In this thesis study, a valveless hydraulic servo system controlled by two pumps is investigated and its performance characteristics are compared with a conventional valve controlled system both experimentally and analytically. The two control techniques are applied on the position control of a single rod linear actuator. In the valve controlled system, the flow rate through the actuator is regulated with a servovalve; whereas in the pump controlled system, two variable speed pumps driven by servomotors reg...
Route planning for unmanned air vehicles
Tulum, Kamil; İder, S. Kemal; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
In this thesis, automatic routing technologies for unmanned air vehicles are investigated. A route planner that minimizes the fuel consumption and maximizes the survivability is developed. While planning the route, using more than one objective entails the auto-routing problem to multi-objective optimization considerations. In this work, these considerations are handled with search algorithms. In order to assess the route options, a fuel consumption model and a survivability model are utilized for the route...
Dynamic modeling of an excavator during digging and simulating the motion
Özünlü, Özcan Mutlu; Söylemez, Eres; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
The aim of this study is to perform the dynamic force analysis of a 3-degrees-of-freedom excavator during digging the soil and to simulate the motion on computer screen. Standard load calculations are done statically, therefore the effects of forces changing with time on the system cannot be observed. The dynamic analysis method used in the thesis is Recursive Newton – Euler Method and the numerical analysis method for simulation is 4th Order Runge – Kutta Method. After this study, the effects of sudden vel...
Static aeroelastic analysis of a generic slender missile using a loosely coupled fluid structure interaction method
Akgül, Mehmet; Sert, Cüneyt; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
There are many active and passive vibration control techniques to reduce the effect of energy on structures which emerges during an earthquake and reduce the displacement of buildings that is caused by ground acceleration. Main advantage of passive vibration control techniques over active vibration control techniques is; no external power or a sensor is required for passive vibration control devices (PVCDs) and it results in lower installation and maintenance costs. However, PVCDs require a predefined optim...
Dynamic modelling of a backhoe-loader
Kılıç, Boran; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
The aim of this study is to develop a dynamic model of the loader system of a backhoe-loader. Rigid bodies and joints in the loader mechanism and loader hydraulic system components are modelled and analyzed in the same environment using the physical modelling toolboxes inside the commercially available simulation software, MATLAB/Simulink. Interaction between the bodies and response of the hydraulic system are obtained by co-operating the mechanical and hydraulic analyses. System variables such as pressure,...
