The main purpose of this study was to investigate preservice teachers’ spatial visualization ability, geometry self-efficacy, and spatial anxiety regarding undergraduate program and gender. The other purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship among preservice teachers’ spatial visualization ability, geometry self-efficacy, and spatial anxiety. The data were collected from 1007 third and fourth grade preservice teachers who were enrolled in Elementary Mathematics Education (EME), Elementary Science Education (ESE), and Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs of four universities in Ankara. The measuring instruments were Spatial Visualization Test (SVT), Geometry Self-Efficacy (GSE) Scale, and Spatial Anxiety (ANX) Scale. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between undergraduate programs regarding spatial visualization ability levels. The EME students had significantly higher SVT scores than the ESE and the ECE students. Moreover, it was concluded that males had significantly higher spatial visualization scores than females. In addition, ECE students’ geometry self-efficacy was significantly lower than that of both EME and ESE students. The geometry self-efficacy scores of female preservice teachers were found significantly lower than of male preservice teachers. Furthermore, the significant difference in spatial anxiety levels was found only between EME and ESE students where EME students’ spatial anxiety levels were higher than ESE students. Moreover, ECE students had the lowest spatial anxiety among other programs. The spatial anxiety levels of males were less than females in all three undergraduate programs. Finally, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between GSE and SVT scores. Moreover, the negative correlation was found between ANX and SVT scores, and between ANX and GSE scores.

The effect of inquiry-based explorations in a dynamic geometry environment on sixth grade students' achievements in polygons
Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat (Elsevier BV, 2011-12-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using a dynamic geometry environment (DGE) together with inquiry-based explorations on the sixth grade students' achievements in polygons and congruency and similarity of polygons. Two groups of sixth grade students were selected for this study: an experimental group composed of 66 students (34 boys and 32 girls); and a control group composed of 68 students (35 boys and 33 girls). The students in the experimental group taught with a DGE, while the ...
A Study On Pre-Service Teachers’ Spatial Visualization Ability and Spatial Anxiety
Erkek, Özlem; Isıksal Bostan, Mine; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (2017-01-01)
This study aims to investigate the pre-service teachers’ spatial visualization ability and spatial anxiety levels with respect to their gender and undergraduate programs. Data were collected from 1007 third and fourth year undergraduate pre-service teachers enrolled in elementary mathematics, science, and early childhood education programs from four universities in Ankara, Turkey. Spatial Visualization Test and the Spatial Anxiety Scale were used as data collection instruments. The results revealed a statis...
The effect of computer-assisted language learning on learners' achievement on the toefl exam
Kılıçkaya, Ferit; Seferoğlu, Gölge; Department of English Language Teaching (2005)
This study aimed to explore the effect of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) on the sophomore undergraduate students̕ success on the TOEFL exam. The study was designed as quasi-experimental research and two variables were focused on: Computer-assisted language learning and traditional instruction. Participants were 34 sophomore students in EFL department in Middle East Technical University. The participants were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups using a table of random numbers...
Student and school characteristics related to elementary students’ nature of science views
Hacıeminoğlu, Esme; Ertepınar, Hamide; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Elementary Education (2010)
The purposes of this study were to explain the development and validation of a new instrument for assessing elementary students’ views of the Nature of Science (NOS) and to investigate student and school level factors that help to explain the difference in NOS views. The sample included 3,062 elementary students elementary schools located in Çankaya. Different from these students, 782 elementary students were the sample for the first focus of this study. The Nature of Science Instrument, Learning Approach Q...
Conceptual change oriented instruction and students' misconceptions in gases
Azizoğlu, Nursen; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2004)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of conceptual change oriented instruction accompanied by demonstrations and gender on tenth grade students̕ understanding of gases concepts, and attitudes toward chemistry. Hundred tenth grade students from two classes taught by the same teacher in a public high school were enrolled in the study in the Fall semester of 2003-2004. Control group students were taught by traditionally designed chemistry instruction (TI), while experimental group students ...
