The objective of this thesis study is to recover nickel and cobalt at maximum efficiency from column leach liquor of lateritic nickel ores existing in Gördes region of Manisa by performing various hydrometallurgical methods under the optimum conditions. This column leach solution of nontronite type lateritic nickel ore was initially neutralized and purified from its basic impurities by a two stage iron removal process under the optimum conditions determined experimentally. Then, nickel and cobalt were precipitated in the form of mixed hydroxide precipitate from the purified leach solution by a two stage precipitation method called “MHP” and a manganese removal process was carried out also under the optimum conditions determined. By decreasing Mn concentration with this process to an acceptable level yielding at most 10% Mn in hydroxide precipitate, it was possible to produce a qualified MHP product suitable to the current marketing and standard conditions. As a result of this thesis study, the experiments conducted showed that by recycle leaching with sulfuric acid about 81% of Ni and 63% of Co in the lateritic nickel ore (9.72 kg Ni / ton of ore and 0.28 kg Co / ton of ore) could be extracted as mixed hydroxide precipitate by MHP method. The MHP product contains 41.9% Ni, 1.0% Co, 2.3% Mn, 0.06% Al, 1.5% Mg, 0.02% Fe, 0.01% Cr, 0.25% Zn, 0.03% Cu and 4.73% S.

Extraction of nickel from lateritic ores
Büyükakıncı, Ergin; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2008)
The aim of this study was to extract nickel and cobalt from the lateritic nickel ores of Gördes region by hydrometallurgical methods under the optimum conditions. Limonitic and nontronitic types of Gördes lateritic nickel ores were used during experiments. Agitative and column leaching experiments at atmospheric pressure were conducted with various parameters; these were duration, temperature and initial sulfuric acid concentration of leach solution. It was shown that in agitative leaching, under the optimu...

The research work presented in this paper determined the optimum conditions at which nickel and cobalt could be obtained at maximum efficiency from the column leach liquor of the lateritic nickel ore existing in Gordes region of Manisa in Turkey by performing effective hydrometallurgical methods. This column leach solution was initially neutralized and purified from its basic impurities by a two-stage iron removal process, nickel and cobalt were precipitated in the form of mixed hydroxide precipitate from t...
Investigation and development of possible leaching processes for recovery of zinc and lead from çinkur leach residues
Sunkar, Ahmet Semih; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2005)
The major aim of this study was to investigate various leaching methods for the recovery of zinc and lead from blended neutral leach residues of Çinkur having a composition of 12.59 % Zn, 15.21 % Pb, 6.45 % Fe, 0.054 % Cd. Initially water leaching tests were performed at various conditions of leaching temperature, reaction time and particle size. The optimized conditions for water leaching were found to be 2 h, 95?C and 250 g/l pulp density with a final pH of 5.9. However, the zinc recovery value of 10.26 %...
Flocculation behavior of two different clay samples from Kırka tincal deposit
Çırak, Mustafa; Hoşten, Çetin; Department of Mining Engineering (2010)
Kırka Boron Plant in EskiĢehir region has been producing tincal contentrate and boron products since 1972. Depending on the industrial demand for boron products, the plant capacity has been gradually enlarged by reaching over 1.5 million metric tons per year. This increase in the capacity has caused serious tailings disposal problems. In addition to the great amount of the tailings (400.000 ton solid waste per year), the tailing material contains mostly clay minerals that show colloidal character. Their sus...
Investigation of the rheological properties of çayirhan coal-water mixtures
Öztoprak, Ayşe Feray; Hiçyılmaz, Cahit; Department of Mining Engineering (2006)
In this thesis, coal-water mixtures (CWM) with Çayırhan lignite were prepared to optimize the parameters of CWM having an ideal behavior which means that at maximum coal loading, relatively stable at static and dynamic conditions and exhibit low viscosity. For this purpose, the effect of the parameters such as pulp density, amount of chemical agents, particle size distribution, addition of methanol and pulp pH were investigated. Results showed that increasing pulp density negatively affects viscosity and al...
