Turkey is important major licid opium poppy (Papaver Somniferum) producer for medicinal and scientific purposes in the world and one of the two traditional producer country. The poppy seeds which are unique part of the opium poppy are used for food purpose. About 25.000 ton/year poppy seeds were produced for food purpose. Recent years morphine content of commercially available poppy seeds were speculated. Some studies have been reported that poppy seeds from different origins contain a wide variation of morphine (2 – 294) μg/g content. They have been used also different sample preparation method (extraction and derivatization) and different instruments (GC-MS) during analyses. In this study morphine content was determined in Turkish origin which were white, yellow and blue poppy seeds colors by using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Different sample preparation method (without derivatization) was used. Morphine was eluted from poppy seeds by acidic water through stationary phase activated aluminum oxide. Poppy seed samples were collected from 13 provinces and 35 different sowing fields of Turkey. The determined morphine contents in poppy seeds were ranged between (9.73 to 37.46) μg/g. Any study was not found in the literatures on determination of total phenolic in poppy seed. In this study, the optimum condition for extraction of polyphenols in poppy seeds was determined and then, total phenolic values were obtained in three different colours seeds by spectrophotometric method. At the end of experiments the total phenolic contents in white, yellow and blue colours poppy seed were found to be 4.44, 3.05 and 3.67 mg/g respectively.

Comparison of acid and enzymatic hydrolysis of tobacco stalk xylan for preparation of xylooligosaccharides
AKPINAR, ÖZLEM; Erdogan, Kader; Bakir, Ufuk; Yılmaz, Levent (2010-01-01)
Tobacco stalk (TS), a major agricultural waste in the Black Sea region of Turkey, was used for the production of xylooligosaccharides (XOs). It contains about 22 g/100 g xylan whose composition was determined as 93.5 g/100 g xylose, 6.54 g/100 g glucose and 11.2 g/100 g uronic acid after complete acid hydrolysis. XO production was performed by enzymatic and acid hydrolysis of xylan which was obtained by alkali extraction from tobacco stalk. In enzyme hydrolysis, xylan was hydrolyzed using a xylanase prepara...
"Quitting like a Turk:" How political priority developed for tobacco control in Turkey
Hoe, Connie; Rodriguez, Daniela C.; Uzumcuoglu, Yesim; Hyder, Adnan A. (2016-09-01)
In recent years, tobacco control emerged as a political priority in Turkey and today the country is widely regarded as one of the global leaders in tackling tobacco use. Although political priority is considered a facilitating factor to the success of addressing public health issues, there is a paucity of research to help us understand how it is developed in middle-income countries. The primary aim of this study is to understand the process and determinants of how tobacco control became a political priority...

Research studies analysing heavy metal or trace elements in Turkish wines is scarce. This study was designed to fill this gap, analysing 43 wines produced in 4 different regions in Turkey. A total of 37 red and 6 white wines produced from various grapes from 2006 to 2008 in Marmara, Aegean, Central Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia regions were studied. Wines were analyzed for Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb using atomic absorption spectrometer equipped (AAS) with electrothermal atomization unit (ET). Ave...
Study on the Chemical Composition, Enzyme Inhibition and Antioxidant Activity of Ziziphora taurica subsp. cleonioides
Sarikurkcu, Cengiz; Kakouri, Eleni; Sarikurkcu, Rifat Tayyib; Tarantilis, Petros A. (2019-12-01)
Ziziphora is a plant used in Turkish and Iran traditional medicine for its antibacterial activity, sedative and stomach soothing properties. Although the chemical profile of the essential oil of different Ziziphora species is well documented, data regarding plant extracts are incomplete. In this study extracts from Ziziphora taurica subsp. cleonioides were obtained using ethyl acetate, methanol and water and the chemical profile of the aerial part of the plant was elucidated. Among the compounds identified,...
Determination of phenolic compounds content and antioxidant activity in skin, pulp, seed, cane and leaf of five native grape cultivars in West Azerbaijan province, Iran
Farhadi, Khalil; Esmaeilzadeh, Forough; Hatami, Mehdi; Forough, Mehrdad; Molaie, Rahim (2016-05-01)
In the present work, the phenolic compounds content and antioxidant activity in the skin, pulp, seed, cane and leaf of one international (Muscat) and five native (Hosseini, Ghara Shira, Agh Shani, Ghara Shani and Ghara Ghandome) grape cultivated in West Azerbaijan, Iran were investigated. Ghara Shani grape skin was found to contain the highest content of total phenolic and anthocyanin and cane of Ghara Shani contains the highest amount of flavonoid. A remarkable DPPH radical scavenging activity up to 95% an...
