Acrylamide based hydrogels were synthesized through copolymerization reaction of allyl methacrylate with acrylamide. Copolymerization reactions were carried out with solution polymerization in tetrahydrofuran by using α-α-azoisobutyronitrile as an initiator at 60 0 C. Three copolymer compositions were studied having 5, 15, 25 molar percentage of allyl methacrylate as feed concentrations. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by FTIR, NMR, DSC, TGA and GPC. 1H-NMR spectra were used to confirm the chemical structures of the copolymers and to determine the comonomer compositions of the copolymers. DSC and TGA analysis were conducted to determine the thermal properties of the copolymers and TGA results showed that copolymers have two step degradation behavior. Molecular weights of the copolymers were determined by GPC. Swelling capacities of the obtained hydrogels were investigated and swelling capacity of the gels reached to 77% as maximum value.

Treatment of opium alkaloid containing wastewater in sequencing batch reactor (SBR)-Effect of gamma irradiation
Bural, Cavit B.; Demirer, Goksel N.; Kantoglu, Omer; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (Elsevier BV, 2010-04-01)
Aerobic biological treatment of opium alkaloid containing wastewater as well as the effect of gamma irradiation as pre-treatment was investigated. Biodegradability of raw wastewater was assessed in aerobic batch reactors and was found highly biodegradable (83-90% degradation). The effect of irradiation (40 and 140 kGy) on biodegradability was also evaluated in terms of BOD5/COD values and results revealed that irradiation imparted no further enhancement in the biodegradability. Despite the highly biodegrada...
Degradation of poly(bisphenol-a-epichlorohydrin) by gamma irradiation
Ozdemir, Tonguc; Usanmaz, Ali (Elsevier BV, 2008-06-01)
In this study, radiation stability of poly(bisphenol-a-epichloroliydrin) (PBEH) was studied via gamma irradiations at two different dose rates of 1540 and 82.8 Gy/h, in order to understand the possible use of PBEH in radioactive waste management as a solidifying agent. The total dose of irradiation was up to 2150kGy. Degradation nature was tested by studying the changes in mechanical and thermal properties with the change of dose rate and total dose of irradiation. Tensile strength at yield was increased fi...
Radiation grafting of various water-soluble monomers on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder: Part I. Grafting conditions and grafting yield
Aydinli, B; Tincer, T (Elsevier BV, 2001-02-01)
Monomers of some water-soluble polymers; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, N, N-dimethyl acrylamide and 1-vinyl-2 pyrrolidone, were grafted on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powders by a direct grafting method in an aqueous medium in air. Inhibition of homopolymerisation was achieved by adding various concentrations of Fe2+ or Cu2+ ions. It was found that the degree of grafting increases linearly with dose till a gelation state is reached, and varies between 40 and 12% depending...
ESR dating of calcrete nodules from Bala, Ankara (Turkey): Preliminary results
Kucukuysal, Ceren; Engin, Birol; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Aydas, Canan (Elsevier BV, 2011-02-01)
The age of two calcrete nodules (C1 and C2) from the Bala section in the region of Ankara, Turkey, is determined by the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) method. Three radiation-induced ESR signals at g=2.0056 (A signal), g=2.0006 (C signal) and g=2.0038 (broad signal, BL) were observed. The broad signal (BL) intensity was used as a dating signal. The properties of this dating signal are described in this manuscript. The calcrete nodules were irradiated with a Co-60 gamma source and measured with an ESR spectro...
Synthesis, characterization and electrochromic properties of copolymer of terephthalic acid bis-(thiophen-3-yl-methyl) thioester with thiophene
Turkarslan, O; Erden, A; Sahin, E; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Informa UK Limited, 2006-01-01)
Terephthalic acid bis-(thiophen-3-yl-methyl thioester) (TTMT) was synthesized via the reaction of thiophen-3-yl methanethiol with terephthaloyl dichloride. Nuclear magnetic resonance ( H-1-NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were utilized for the characterization of the monomer. Electrochemical copolymerization of TTMT with thiophene in acetonitrile/boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (AN/BFEE) (8:2, v/v) solvent mixture was realized by using tetrabutylammonium tetrafluorobor...
