Climate change concerns, high oil prices and increasing government support are some of the driving reasons of increasing renewable energy legislation, incentives, and commercialization. Hydroelectricity is the most widely used form of renewable energy and refers to electricity generated by hydropower. In this study, a storage facility is proposed to store some additional water and increase the profitability of the existing Birkapılı Hydroelectric Power Plant. The storage facility is composed of a gravity dam and an uncontrolled spillway. With the help of the proposed storage facility, maximum utilization of the water is provided and shift of the electricity generation to peak demand periods becomes possible. Consequently, feasibility of the existing power plant is improved. A number of alternatives for a spillway are taken into account and the corresponding concrete gravity dam is designed. Stability analyses and operation studies are conducted using spreadsheets to achieve an economical solution.

Hydropower helps countries meet their energy needs in an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable way while saving money and increasing energy security and self-reliance. Being one of the fastest developing countries, electricity demand of Turkey has been increasing and is expected to increase in the future. Untapped hydropower potential is among the prospective alternative resources to supply this demand. Developing a hydropower project requires a great deal of expertise in multiple discipli...

Nowadays, the world faces with lack of electricity access, water scarcity, climate change and global warming. The hydropower industry has a crucial role to deal with these problems as well as to develop projects for sustainable development. However, if social, environmental and economical impacts of a hydroelectric power plant (HEPP) project are not considered, it might lead to irreparable destructions. Nowadays, in Turkey, due to social and environmental problems resulting from hydropower projects, the opp...

Renewable and clean energy is gaining more importance after the nuclear disasters with increasing awareness of depletion of fossil fuels, concerns about the global warming and increasing energy demand. However, intermittency of renewable resources is the biggest challenge in the restructuring world energy market. Energy has to be stored against sudden changes in the production and consumption. In order to keep the continuity of the energy supply, pumped storage can be a remedy. Therefore, pumped storage pro...
Determination of wind power potential and optimal wind power plant locations in Turkey

Due to increased environmental concerns, utilization of the renewable energy, especially the wind power, gains importance. Like developed countries which have set their renewable energy targets for the long term integration, Turkish government has also set the goal as 20 GW of total wind power installed capacity in 2023. In this thesis, the wind power potential in Turkey is analyzed and different cases are studied to determine optimal locations for wind power plant establishment. In order to determine the w...
