The purpose of this study was to investigate the statistical literacy of 8th grade students and their attitudes towards statistics. Moreover, the relationship between their statistical literacy and attitudes towards statistics was examined. The study was conducted in Yenimahalle district of Ankara in the Spring semester of 2011-2012 academic year. The sample of this study was obtained through cluster random sampling. Nine schools were randomly selected for the study. A total of 1074 eighth grade students in these schools participated. The scales used in the data collection were Statistical Literacy Test (SLT) adapted from Probability Attitudes Scale previously developed for Turkish students (Bulut, 1994) and Attitude towards Statistics Questionnaire (ATSQ) developed by the researcher based on Watson’s (1997) three tier framework. The analysis of the mean scores of statistical literacy in terms of content domains revealed that although sample, graphs, and chance contents had closer mean scores to each other which was around moderate value; average, inference, and variation content domains had lower mean scores. A one-way within subjects ANOVA indicated that there were significant differences between Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 aspects of statistical literacy. The pairwise comparisons indicated that students performed lowest in third tier of statistical literacy where students were required to evaluate inappropriate statistical claims. Although, students performed slightly higher in the first tier where they showed their ability in understanding statistical terminology; their performance was the highest in the second tier which was interpreting statistical claims in context. Eighth grade students’ attitudes towards statistics were positive with a mean score of 3.52 in five point scale. The correlation analysis indicated that there were positive and significant relationship between students’ attitudes towards statistics and statistical literacy scores.

Can, Gülfidan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-08-01)
The purpose of this study is to investigate social science doctoral students' perceptions and attitudes toward written feedback about their academic writing and towards those who provide it. The study culminates in an explanatory model to describe the relationships between students' perceptions and attitudes, their revision decisions, and other relevant factors in their written feedback practices. The investigation used a mixed methods approach involving 276 participants from two large mountain west public ...
A case study on the aspects of classroom discourse in a fifth grade mathematics class in a regional elementary boarding school
Şahin, Şule; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of this study was to analyze and interpret specific aspects and characteristics of classroom discourse of an elementary mathematics classroom. To examine the classroom discourse, a fifth grade mathematics classroom was observed during sixteen weeks, and twenty lessons in total. The analysis was based on two main categories: (1) Student Learning and (2) Teacher Moves. Student Learning further divided into two sub-categories as content and learning. Additionally, Teacher Moves also divided into co...
Using technology in preventing and remedying seventh grade students' misconceptions in forming and solving linear equations
Erek, Görkem; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Department of Educational Sciences (2008)
The purposes of this study was to investigate seventh-grade students’ misconceptions related to forming and solving equations and examine the role of technology use in preventing and remedying these misconceptions. A group of 18 seventh grade students was given a diagnostic test before they started the equations unit to determine their misconceptions related to the topic. Students studied equations for 6 weeks and half of the instruction took place in the computer lab where they used various electronic mani...
An investigation of pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ views and reflections about elementary mathematics classes based on their observations in school experience courses
Doğan, Sümeyra; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of changes in preservice elementary mathematics teachers’ views and reflections about elementary mathematics classes based on their observations in School Experience I and School Experience II courses. Specifically, this study investigated pre-service elementary mathematics teachers’ views and reflections about instruction, assessment, and classroom management issues in elementary mathematics classes based on their observations in School Experience I a...
Variation among schools on classroom practices in science based on TIMSS-1999 in Turkey
Aypay, Ahmet; Erdogan, Mehmet; Soezer, Mehmet A. (Wiley, 2007-12-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences among schools using student responses in the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study-1999 (TIMSS-99) data. Schools were classified into two groups based on eighth grade students' overall achievement in science. Two different discriminant function analyses were performed to distinguish high- and low-performing schools, based both on classroom practices and factor structures (student-centered activities, teacher-centered activities, attitudes toward...
