EU trade strategies which include multilateralism, bilateralism/inter-regionalism, unilateralism, and protectionism have displayed different trends in different time periods. Regarding the determinants of EU trade strategies, while institutionalist approach points to the roles played by core EU institutions, pluralist approach draws attention to the influence of domestic interest groups. Systemic approach, on the other hand, underlines the impact of external constraints or opportunities. Nevertheless, neither of these approaches can provide a complete explanation as each of them focuses on the impact of one factor. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the changing dynamics and determinants of EU trade strategies by developing a more interactionist approach. For this purpose, firstly, main arguments of the previous approaches utilized in the analysis of EU’s external trade policy are critically reviewed. Later, all the major factors proposed by previous approaches are brought together in an interactionist manner in order to demonstrate that a direction of influence exists among these factors and they each play a distinct role in the determination of EU trade strategies. Secondly, reasons behind different trends displayed by EU trade strategies throughout history are investigated by utilizing the interactionist model for three major periods: 1958-1995; 1995-2000; 2000-present. The analysis reveals that in all three periods, external factors always drive the EU to reconsider its trade strategies while their specific content is rather shaped by domestic dynamics

The contribution of design to an export economy is well recognised and can have a significant impact on balance of trade. Whilst many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have economies that are supported by the export of raw materials or primary agricultural resources, adding value to sustainable indigenous materials through innovative design-led product development remains an untapped source of wealth generation. Foreign direct investment and technology spillovers in the Turkish manufacturing industry
Pamukcu, Mehmet Teoman (IGI Global, 2013-01-01)
Technology spillovers from foreign to domestic firms in emerging economies are considered to be the most important channel through which Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) influence the host economy. Empirical evidence about the existence, magnitude and direction of FDI-related spillovers in these countries is contradictory pointingto the necessity of conducting more econometric studies using firm-level data. We conduct an econometric analysis to assess the impact of FDI-related...
Germany in Europe or Europe in Germany: an evaluation of the mutual interaction between German reunification and European integration from 1945 until 2009
Tekiner, Uğur; Okyayuz, Mehmet; Department of European Studies (2015)
The aim of the thesis is to analyse the mutual impact of the processes of the German reunification and European integration in the post-war era interchangeably, and specifically elaborate on the European Union experience of Germany from this period till 2009 Eurozone Debt Crisis. Given that the idea o...
An analysis of the obstacles and difficulties in the introduction of the EU Common Agricultural Policy reform
Yamaç, Necati; Acar, Mustafa (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2009-12-1)
The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is the first Common Policy of the European Union (EU). It was established in the late 1950’s, but came into force in 1962. Its primary aim was to overcome food shortage problems after the Second World War. Therefore, the CAP introduced price support measures, eventually resulting in surplus production. This meant a financial burden for the EU budget as the reduction of surplus required export subsidies, which distorted international agricultural trade. In many reform eff...
Trade liberalization and innovation decisions of firms: Lessons from Post-1980 Turkey
Pamukcu, Mehmet Teoman (2003-01-01)
Determinants of innovation decisions of Turkish manufacturing firms are estimated for 1989-93, with an emphasis on determinants that are linked to trade policy reforms of the 1980s. Using plant-level data, we find that positive effects of trade liberalization on innovation decision are transmitted mainly through technology embodied in imported machinery. Being a technology licensee, an exporter, or having a foreign partner does not exert a significant positive effect on a firm's probability to innovate, nor...
