This study aims to find out the relationship between Working Memory Capacity and Verbal and Mathematical Achievement. The participants were 60 students at Hacettepe University School of Foreign Languages Department of Basic English. For measuring working memory capacity, one simple (Digit Span Task) and one complex (Reading Span Task) were used. Verbal achievement of the participants was measured both in their native language (Turkish) and their foreign language (English). For measuring their native language achievement, the participants’ Turkish scores in Yükseköğretime Geçis Sınavı 2010 (Transition to Higher Education Examination); and for measuring their foreign language achievement, the participants’ scores in Hacettepe University School of Foreign Languages Department of Basic English Elementary Groups Achievement Exams I and II were used. For measuring their mathematical achievement, the participants’ Mathematic scores in Yükseköğretime Geçis Sınavı 2010 (Transition to Higher Education Examination) were used. The data was analyzed using a statistical package program (SPSS Version 18.0). The data analysis results revealed that there is a relationship between working memory capacity and verbal and mathematical achievements of the participants. It was tentatively concluded that, as the working memory capacity of the participants increase, so might their achievement in verbal and mathematical subjects. This result was discussed in terms of its implications, which may be that, if working memory capacity could be improved; the cognitive processes which the working memory is responsible for might also improve.

An assessment of the effects of teaching methods on academic performance of students in accounting courses
Hosal-Akman, Nazli; Simga-Mugan, Can (2010-01-01)
This study explores the effect of teaching methods on the academic performance of students in accounting courses. The study was carried out over two semesters at a well-known university in Turkey in principles of financial accounting and managerial accounting courses. Students enrolled in the courses were assigned to treatment and control groups. Treatment group students solved assigned problems or cases in groups in class, while in the control group the instructor lectured on and solved the problems and ca...
Investigation of Using Online Video Case Discussions in Teacher Education: Sources of Evidence of Mathematics Learning
Osmanoglu, Aslihan; Koç, Yusuf; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2013-03-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers' analyses of student learning in a video case of mathematics instruction via an online learning forum. The study was conducted in the context of three different mathematics methods courses in a 4-year college in the Midwestern United States. Twenty-six students (19 undergraduate and 7 master's students) participated in the study. As a course assignment, the participants were asked to watch and discuss a video case of ma...
An investigation of individual difference factors in online instruction
Yılmaz, Kıvanç; Sümer, Hayriye Canan; Department of Psychology (2006)
This thesis study analyzed the individual difference factors affecting the success of online instruction. The factors that were examined are mastery goal orientation, learning self efficacy, and conscientiousness. The success of online instruction was examined in terms of the knowledge and skill acquisition during training, the practice level, and program completion rate. To investigate the effects of the hypothesized factors, an online instruction program on time management, fast and effective reading, and...
The Effect of metacognitive instructional method on eleventh grade students’ metacognitive skill and mathematical procedural and conceptual knowledge
Abdul Aziz, Tian; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2016)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of metacognitive instructional method, compared to traditional instruction on eleventh grade science student’s mathematical procedural and conceptual knowledge, and metacognitive skills. Sixty-six eleventh-grade students in a school in Bandung City, Indonesia took part in this study. Matching-only pre-test-post-test control group design was conducted. The classes were randomly assigned to experimental and control group. In the experimental group metacog...
The Effect of the instruction based on the epistemologically and metacognitively improved 7E learning cycle on tenth grade students' achievement and epistemological understandings in Physics
Yerdelen Damar, Sevda; Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
This study investigated the effect of the epistemologically and metacognitively stimulated 7E learning cycle (EM-7ELC) on tenth grade students’ physics achievement and epistemological understandings in physics. The participants of the study included 107 (49 Female, 58 Male) tenth grade students at two Anatolian teacher training high schools in Ankara. A quasi-experimental with matching-only pretest-posttest control group design was employed. Two intact classes of each school were randomly assigned to the ex...
