The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the hydraulic conditions at which air-entraining vortices would form in front of horizontal intakes and to determine the ways of eliminating the formation of these vortices by testing anti-vortex devices. For these reasons, a series of experiments were conducted in an experimental setup composed of a reservoir having the dimensions of 3.10 m x 3.10 m x 2.20 m and a pump connected to the intake pipe. Within the reservoir, between the concrete side walls adjustable plexiglass side walls were placed to provide the desired wall clearance for the intake pipes. Six pipes of different diameters; 5 cm, 10 cm, 14.4 cm, 19.4 cm, 25 cm and 30 cm were horizontally mounted on the front side of the reservoir one by one, and for each case, a wide range of discharges was provided from the reservoir by the pump. Under symmetrical approach flow conditions and zero bottom wall clearance, the experiments were repeated for each intake pipe and the “critical submergence depths” for the tested discharges were determined. At some of the discharges, the effect of horizontal plates located on the top of the pipe entrance as anti-vortex devices on the elimination of the vortices was investigated. The measured critical submergence depths were related in dimensionless form to the relevant dimensionless parameters and empirical equations were derived. These equations were compared with similar ones available in the literature and it was shown that the agreement between them was quite good.

The effect of prismatic ruoghness elements on hydraulic jump
Evcimen, Taylan Ulaş; Tokyay, Nuray; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
The objective of this study is to determine the effect of different roughness types and arrangements on hydraulic jump characteristics in a rectangular channel. Three different types of roughness were used along experiments. All of them had rectangular prism shapes and that were placed normal to the flow direction. To avoid cavitation, height of roughness elements were arranged according to level of the channel inlet, so that the crests of roughness elements would not be protruding into the flow. The effect...
Investigation of critical submergence at single and multiple- horizontal intake structures having air- entraining vortices
Gökmener, Serkan; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
In this experimental study the variation of the critical submergence of air- entraining vortices with important flow and geometrical parameters were investigated at single and multiple- horizontal intake structures. In the scope of this study, three identical pipes of diameter Di=0.265 m were tested at a wide range of discharge with varying side wall clearances under symmetrical and asymmetrical approach flow conditions. Using dimensional analysis dimensionless equation was developed for critical submergenc...
Determination of critical submergence depth at horizontal intakes
Haspolat, Emre; Göğüş, Mustafa; Köken, Mete; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
The purpose of the study is to investigate the formation of air entraining vortices under both symmetrical and asymmetrical approach flow conditions in an experimental setup of a horizontal water intake structure composed of a reservoir-pipe system. To determine at which critical submergence the air entraining vortices forming; a series of experiments were conducted in the experimental setup with horizontal pipes of four different diameters. Approach channel side walls of the intake structure model are adju...
Hydraulics of circular bottom intake orifices
Bulut, Muhammed; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
In this study, the hydraulics of circular bottom intake orifices was investigated experimentally in a hydraulic model constructed in the laboratory. For this reason, a series of circular orifices at various diameters were located at the bottom of a flume and tested under a wide range of different flow conditions. The discharge passing through the orifice of known diameter, location and slope were measured and recorded along with the corresponding flow rate of the main channel and its flow depth. One or some...
Effect of approach channel shape on theformation of vortices at single-horizontal intakes
Sönmez, Can Metin; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
In an experimental setup of a water intake structure composed of a reservoir-pipe system, the formation of air-entraining vortices under symmetric flow conditions were investigated for different approach channel shapes. In the first set of the experiments the approach channel walls were kept parallel to each other and be perpendicular to the head-wall of the intake structure. In the following sets of the experiments these walls were located at different angles to the head-wall. A series of experiments were ...
