Multimedia applications over the Internet and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) gain a lot of attention. IPTV has a number of service requirements such as; high bandwidth, scalability, minimum delay, jitter and channel switch time. IP multicast, IMS (IP Multimedia System) Protocol and peer-to-peer approaches are proposed for implementing IPTV. However, IP multicast requires all the routers in the core network to possess multicast capability, IMS does not easily scale and P2P cannot e ciently utilize the network resources because of its completely distributed nature. To this end, we propose new application layer multicast protocol Cluster Based Application Layer Multicast IPTV (CALMTV) which combines application layer multicast, scalable video coding and probing techniques to meet IPTV requirements. We present the components and their relevant algorithms and evaluate the performance of CALMTV with ns2 simulations. Our results compared with the published results of other IPTV architectures show that CALMTV has better performance in end-to-end delay and zapping time.

CALMTV: A Cluster Based Application Layer Multicast Architecture for IPTV
Ozkardes, Merve; Schmidt, Şenan Ece (2013-12-13)
Multimedia applications over the Internet and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) gain a lot of attention. IPTV has a number of service requirements such as; high bandwidth, scalability, bounds on delay, jitter and channel zapping time. IP multicast, IP Multimedia System (IMS) Protocol and peer-to-peer (P2P) approaches are proposed for implementing IPTV. However, IP multicast requires all the routers in the core network to possess multicast capability, IMS does not easily scale and P2P cannot efficiently ut...
Fusion of multimodal information for multimedia information retrieval
Yılmaz, Turgay; Yazıcı, Adnan; Department of Computer Engineering (2014)
An effective retrieval of multimedia data is based on its semantic content. In order to extract the semantic content, the nature of multimedia data should be analyzed carefully and the information contained should be used completely. Multimedia data usually has a complex structure containing multimodal information. Noise in the data, non-universality of any single modality, and performance upper bound of each modality make it hard to rely on a single modality. Thus, multimodal fusion is a practical approach...
Design and development of an internet telephony test device
Çelikadam, Turgut; Ergül, Faruk Rüyal; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2003)
The issues involved in Internet telephony (Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) device) can be best understood by actually implementing a VoIP device and studying its performance. In this regard, an Internet telephony device, providing full duplex voice communication over internet, and a user interface program have been developed. In the process, a number of implementation issues came into focus, which we have touched upon in this thesis. Transport layer network protocols are discussed in the concept of real...
Optimizing Multipath Routing With Guaranteed Fault Tolerance in Internet of Things
Hasan, Mohammed Zaki; Al-Turjman, Fadi (2017-10-01)
Internet of Things (IoTs) refers to the rapidly growing network of connected objects and people that are able to collect and exchange data using embedded sensors. To guarantee the connectivity among these objects and people, fault tolerance routing has to be significantly considered. In this paper, we propose a bio-inspired particle multi-swarm optimization (PMSO) routing algorithm to construct, recover, and select k-disjoint paths that tolerates the failure while satisfying the quality of service parameter...
Performance of transport protocols for multimedia communications in wireless sensor networks
Akan, Oezguer B. (2007-10-01)
Many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications require efficient multimedia communication capabilities. However, the existing communication protocols in the literature mainly aim to achieve energy efficiency and reliability objectives and do not address multimedia communication challenges in WSN. In this paper, comprehensive performance evaluation of the existing transport protocols is performed for multimedia communication in WSN. Performance metrics such as packet delivery rate, end-to-end packet delay, ...
