In previous research, it has been shown that motion compensated prediction residuals can have 1-D structures in many regions and that 1-D directional DCTs can compress such regions more e ciently than the conventional 2-D DCT. In this thesis, we analyze the spatial characteristics of the disparity compensated prediction residuals and the analysis results show that, similar to motion compensated prediction residuals, many regions of disparity compensated prediction residuals also have 1-D structures. Thus, we apply 1-D directional DCTs for compressing disparity compensated prediction residuals in this thesis. To show the achievable compression e ciency gains from using these transforms, we modify the reference software of the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) extension of H.264 so that each residual block can be transformed either with one of the 1-D DCTs or the conventional 2-D DCT.Experimental results indicate that the overall compression e ciency increases.

Many alternative transforms have been developed recently for improved compression of images, intra prediction residuals or motion-compensated prediction residuals. In this paper, we propose alternative transforms for multiview video coding. We analyze the spatial characteristics of disparity-compensated prediction residuals, and the analysis results show that many regions have 1-D signal characteristics, similar to previous findings for motion-compensated prediction residuals. Signals with such characterist...
Multi-spectral satellite image registration using scale-restricted surf
TEKE, Mustafa; Temizel, Alptekin (2010-08-26)
Satellites generally have arrays of sensors having different resolution and wavelength parameters. For some applications, images acquired from different viewpoints and positions are required to be aligned. This alignment process could be achieved by matching the image features followed by image registration. In this paper registration of multispectral satellite images using Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) method is examined. The performance of SURF for registration of high resolution satellite images capt...
Visibility of dct quantization noise for high dynamic range images.

Discrete cosine transform (DCT) is one of the fundamental stages, which is widely used and studied in lossy image compression. This technique aims to generate a minimum visible distortion in an image with respect to human visual system (HVS). The studies until now propose DCT quantization matrices for low dynamic range (LDR) images to display on LDR monitors. In this thesis research, the visibility of DCT quantization noise is studied for high dynamic range (HDR) images. High luminance patterns for DCT quan...
High-resolution multispectral satellite image matching using scale invariant feature transform and speeded up robust features
TEKE, Mustafa; Vural, M. Firat; Temizel, Alptekin; Yardimci, Yasemin (2011-09-23)
Satellite images captured in different spectral bands might exhibit nonlinear intensity changes at the corresponding spatial locations due to the different reflectance responses for these bands. This affects the image registration performance negatively as the corresponding features might have different properties in different bands. We propose a modification to the widely used scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) method to increase the correct feature matching ratio and to decrease the computation time...
PROGRESSIVE COMPRESSION OF DIGITAL ELEVATION DATA USING MESHES
Kose, Kivanc; Yılmaz, Erdal; ÇETİN, AHMET ENİS (2009-07-17)
In this paper a new Digital Elevation Map (DEM) image compression algorithm is proposed. DEM image can be threated as a grayscale image, whose pixel values are the elevation values of the map points. The grayscale DEM image is compressed using an adaptive wavelet based image compression algorithm. The method, which is an extension of the progressive mesh compression takes advantage of the multiresolution property of the wavelets while coding the map images. This makes it possible to decode different resolut...
