The aim of this study was to fabricate inorganic-organic composites with an architecture resembling to natural nacre using a novel hybrid conventional method called Hot-Press Assisted Slip Casting (HASC). Alumina platelets, glass platelets and glass flakes with different aspect ratios were used as two-dimensional inorganic fillers to reinforce epoxy matrix. Correlation between processing parameters, inorganic content, orientation of the two-dimensional reinforcements and mechanical property enhancement of the fabricated composites was examined. In order to investigate the effect of interfacial compatibility and adhesion on the mechanical properties of the fabricated composites, reinforcement surfaces were modified with silane coupling agents. As received and functionalized reinforcement surfaces were studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm the adsorption of silane molecules. Fabricated bio-inspired bulk lamellar composite materials were characterized in terms of their microstructural architecture and mechanical properties. The results obtained indicated that HASC processing is an easy, fast and effective pathway to fabricate bulk inorganic-organic composites exhibiting nacre-like brick-and-mortar architecture. HASC processed composites reinforced by either alumina platelets or glass flakes exhibited enhanced mechanical performance as compared to neat epoxy and composites fabricated by simple mixing, as a result of their nacre-like architecture with well aligned reinforcements. Functionalization of the reinforcement surfaces by silane coupling agents improved the compatibility and adhesion between the reinforcements and the matrix resulting in further enhancement of mechanical properties of bulk lamellar composites fabricated by HASC process. Experimental investigations also revealed the fact that high aspect ratio reinforcements are more effective in reinforcing the epoxy matrix.

Processing and characterization of glass flake reinforced thermoplastic polymer matrix bio-inspried bulk lamellar composites /
Güneş, Aylin; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2014)
The aim of this study was to develop processing pathways to fabricate glass flake reinforced bio-inspired composites with microstructural architecture similar to that of nacre using two processing routes based on hot-pressing and magnetic field assistance. Glass flakes with different aspect ratios were used as inorganic reinforcement in two different thermoplastic matrices, polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Correlation between inorganic content, microstructural architecture and mec...
Experimental and numerical failure analysis of advanced composite structures with holes
Atar, Mehmet Bilal; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
In this work, a design methodology for advanced composite structures with holes is presented. A three dimensional finite element model (FEM) is constructed to simulate such a structural application similar to weight-pockets in helicopter blades. Material properties are obtained by a material characterization study. The progressive failure method with FEM is used for the material degradation. In order to induce delamination in simulation, cohesive layers are implemented between composite layers. Results are ...
Fabrication and characterization of porous tricalcium phosphate ceramics
Koc, N; Timucin, M; Korkusuz, Feza (Elsevier BV, 2004-01-01)
Preforms of beta tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) ceramics were produced by using a modified slip casting technique. The slip was prepared by suspending custom-made TCP powder and PMMA beads in an aqueous medium stabilized with an acrylic deflocculant. Porous TCP ceramics were obtained by sintering the polymer-free preforms for 2 h at 1000 degreesC. The XRD pattern for the TCP ceramic indicated that the product was essentially pure beta-TCP. SEM examination of pore size and pore size distribution revealed th...
Performance of polylactide biopolymer as matrix material for woven fiber composite laminates
Demirok, Gokberk; Kaynak, Cevdet (2022-01-01)
The first purpose of this study was, as the first time in the literature, to investigate usability of polylactide (PLA) biopolymer as the matrix of high-performance composite laminated structures having woven forms of glass and carbon fibers. For this purpose, 2-14 layers of 2 × 2 twill Carbon Fiber (CF) and 1 × 1 plain weave Glass Fiber (GF) forms were stacked by PLA powders followed by consolidation of these layers by compression molding technique. After conducting various tests and analysis it was observ...
