Nowadays, in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), usage of Location Based Services (LBS) has been exploded and map based web/mobile applications have been rapidly increased. With the occurrence of this event, spatial data accessing, storing and querying operations have become more important than before. There is a new challenge, which is about the efficient access to geographical map data at multiple detail of level. Multiple detail of level is a process of derivation of a map at a particular resolution. This process is called as Multi Resolution Database (MRDB). It is an expensive job and needs advance knowledge about map generalization techniques such as simplification, amalgamation tasks. Existing spatial databases currently do not support this innovation. Current spatial databases only support some basic geometry types to model features and spatial operators/operands for determining geospatial measurements like distance, area, and length. MRDB has another usage domain called information drilling. Information drilling provides linking between spatial objects at different spatial databases. Unfortunately, there is no support for data drilling in current spatial databases. In this study, a multi resolution database concept is modeled and prototype applications are developed. Information drilling methodology between multiple spatial databases is constructed. This drilling scenario contains a scale based linked data retrieval features. Sample location is selected as Ankara, which is the capital city of Turkey. Schools, roads, districts and power transformers data have been used as example of different data layers. Server side application is created to serve services to clients by using Java Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technologies. Also a native mobile application is implemented for Android platform to demonstrate information drilling in MRDB concept in mobile domain.

Weighted multi-visibility analysis on directional paths
Şeker, Çağıl; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2010)
Visibility analysis is an important GIS tool that is used in a diverse array of disciplines ranging from earth sciences to telecommunications. Multi-visibility, as a cumulative type of visibility, combines many point-to-point results into a multi-value array. Points, lines, or areas can be used as sources or targets; and the combined values can be calculated in both ways. Through multi-visibility, a special 2.5D visibility value surface can be constructed over a digital elevation model. The effectiveness of...
Context based interoperability to support infrastructure management in municipalities
Tufan, Emrah; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Oğuztüzün, Mehmet Halit S.; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2010)
Interoperability between Geographic Information System (GIS) of different infrastructure companies is still a problem to be handled. Infrastructure companies deal with many operations as a part of their daily routine such as a regular maintenance, or sometimes they deal with unexpected situations such as a malfunction due to natural event, like a flood or an earthquake. These situations may affect all companies and affected infrastructure companies response to these effects. Responses may result in conseque...
Retrospective adaptive prefetching for interactive Web GIS applications
Yesilmurat, Serdar; İşler, Veysi (2012-07-01)
A major task of a Web GIS (Geographic Information Systems) system is to transfer map data to client applications over the Internet, which may be too costly. To improve this inefficient process, various solutions are available. Caching the responses of the requests on the client side is the most commonly implemented solution. However, this method may not be adequate by itself. Besides caching the responses, predicting the next possible requests from a client and updating the cache with responses for those re...
Real-time 2D/3D display of dted maps and evaluation of interpolation algorithms
Demir, Ali; Coşar, Ahmet; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2010)
In Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, aster data constitutes one of the major data types. The displaying of the raster data has an important part in GIS applications. Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) is one of the raster data types, which is used as the main data source in this thesis. The DTED data is displayed on the screen as digital images as a pixel value, which is represented in gray scale, corresponding to an elevation (texel). To draw the images, the texel values are mostly inter...
GIS-based stochastic modeling of physical accessibility by using floating car data and monte Carlo Simulations
Ertuğay, Kıvanç; Düzgün, H. Şebnem; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2011)
The term physical accessibility has widely been used by geographers, economists and urban planners and basically reflects the relative ease of access to/from several urban/rural services by considering various travelling costs. Numerous accessibility measures, ranging from simple to sophisticated, can be found in the GIS based accessibility modeling literature. However, whether simple or sophisticated, one of the fundamental shortcomings of the current GIS-based accessibility measures is that they are gener...
