In this work, the effects of addition of nanoparticles halloysite, (HNT), organically modified montmorillonites (MMT10A, MMT25A and MMT30B) and SiO2 on thermal degradation characteristics of polyamide 6 (PA6), polylactide (PLA) and polystyrenes (PS and HIPS) involving flame retardants are investigated. The composites of PA6 and PLA involve phosphorus containing flame retardant, aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi). Composites HIPS involve mineral flame retardant, aluminium hydroxide and those of PS involve halogenated flame retardant, brominated epoxy (BE). Addition of MMT25A does not affec+ thermal stability of PA6. On the other hand, thermal stability of PA6 decreases in the presence of HNT, and increases in the presence of MMT30B. Upon incorporation of AlPi thermal stability of PA6 decreases noticeably. Addition of nanoparticles to flame retarded PA6 affects both thermal stability and product patterns. In the presence of AlPi, thermal stability of PLA is decreased due to the attack of phosphinate groups to carbonyl groups. Upon addition of MMT30B to PLA-AlPi, thermal stability of the composite is increased slightly. In addition, trans-esterification reactions between PLA and the organic modifier of the nanoclay are noted. Presence of SiO2 affects mainly product patterns of AlPi, whereas, in the presence of HNT, the interactions between PLA and AlPi are hindered, and product patterns resemble to those of the pure forms. Products involving head-to-head linkages, double and triple bonds are generated during the pyrolysis of HIPS in the presence of MMT10A. The addition of aluminium hydroxide enhances the effects of the clay. Reactions between BE and PS, and upon addition of Sb2O3, reactions between BE and Sb2O3 and between the products generated and PS are noticed. Addition of MMT10A hinders the interactions between BE and PS. On the other hand, the reactions of Sb2O3 with bromines are increased in the presence of MMT10A.

Effects of nanoparticles on thermal degradation of polylactide/aluminium diethylphosphinate composites
Kaya, Hatice; Özdemir, Esra; Kaynak, Cevdet; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2016-03-01)
We investigated the thermal degradation characteristics of polylactide (PLA) aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi) composites involving SiO2, halloysite (HNT) and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. Presence of nanoparticles, SiO2, HNT and OMMT affected both thermal stability and relative yields of thermal degradation products of PLA/AlPi. The transesterification reactions and interactions between PLA and AlPi were depressed in the presence of SiO2 and HNT. The ...
Improvement of mechanical and flame retardancy properties of biocomposites based on low density polyethylene and polylactic acid
Altun, Yasemin; Bayramlı, Erdal; Doğan, Mehmet Onur; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2015)
The main objective of this study was to improve the mechanical and flame retardant properties of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly (lactic acid) (PLA) based biocomposites. Wood flour (WF) and jute fabric were used as the fillers. In the mechanical property improvement studies with LDPE, the effect of two compatibilizing agents MA (random terpolymer of ethylene, acrylic ester and maleic acid) and GMA (random terpolymer of ethylene, acrylic ester and glycidyl metacrylate) functionalized polymers at dif...
Effect of expandable graphite on flame retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane composites filled with huntite&hydromagnesite mineral
Guler, Turkan; Tayfun, Umit; Bayramlı, Erdal; DOĞAN, Mehmet (2017-01-10)
The effect of expandable graphite (EG) was studied on the flame retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing huntite&hydromagnesite (HH). According to the flammability tests results, the synergistic interaction was observed between HH and EG. The maximum limiting oxygen index (LOI value was observed at a ratio of 1:1 (HH:EG) and the highest vertical burning test (UL-94) rating of V0 was observed at a ratios of 4:1, 3:2 and 1:1. The synergistic interaction betwe...
Effect of heat treatment on microstructural and mechanical properties of molybdenum based PM ferrous alloys
Davoudnezhad, Ramona; Ögel, Bilgehan; Durlu, Nuri; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2016)
In this study, the effect of different heat treatment processes on microstructural and mechanical properties of Distaloy-DH and Astaloy Mo (Fe-2Cu-1.5Mo) powders are investigated. Powder samples are sintered at 1120°C for 45 minutes in a sintering furnace under reducing atmosphere of: 10% H2 + 90% N2. After sintering, secondary heat treatments are performed on samples. Microstructural characterization of samples is done with optical and electron microscopy. Selective etching is utilized for determining the ...
Effect of kaolin addition on alkali capture capability during combustion of olive residue
Batır, Özge; Selçuk, Nevin; Külah, Görkem (2019-01-02)
The effect of kaolin addition on the combustion characteristics of olive residue was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) combined with Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer in parallel with ash characteristics were studied by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyzer. The experiments were carried out by burning olive residue with 2%, 4% and 8% by wt. kaolin at 900 degrees C. Results indicate that the addition of kaolin led to a decrease in the rate of weight loss du...
