Polybenzoxazines possessing excellent mechanical and physical properties has been developed to overcome the shortcomings associated with the use of traditional phenolics. Various approaches for performance improvement of polybenzoxazine were examined. These approaches include alloying with other high performance polymers, hybridization with inorganics, and designing of novel monomers as well as high molecular weight polymeric precursors. In the first part of this work, benzoxazines based on phenol and aniline or aniline derivatives namely aminopyridine, aminobenzonitrile and nitroaniline are synthesized and polymerized by curing the monomers systematically. In the second part of the work metal or metal ions are incorporated to benzoxazine monomers based on aminopyridine, aminobenzonitrile and nitroaniline. The structural and thermal characteristics of the polybenzoxazines and metal or metal ion functional polybenzoxazines are analyzed via FTIR, NMR, DSC, TGA and DP-MS techniques. The effects of curing program used and incorporation of metal and/or metal ion on structural and thermal characteristics of the polybenzoxazines are investigated. In general, the benzoxazines based on aniline or aniline derivatives are polymerized via ring opening of oxazine ring followed by attack of NCH2 groups to mainly para positions of phenol and aniline ring. The char yield and presence of chains that can only decompose at elevated temperatures mainly depend on extent of crosslinking and unsaturated linkages. Coordination of metal and/or metal ion to pyridine in case of aminopyridine based benzoxazine, to CN groups in case of aminobenzonitrile and finally to NO2 groups in case of nitroaniline cause drastic changes in structural and thermal characteristics of the polybenzoxazines produced. The coordination of metal or metal ion to the aromatic ring of the benzoxazine monomer promotes the evolution of amine or substituted amine groups which in turn causes an increase in the formation of unsaturated linkages but a decrease in the extent of crosslinking.

Preparation and characterization of polybenzoxazine involving various additives
Hisar Telli, Ayşegül; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Özkan, Necati; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2021-1-12)
Polybenzoxazines, a class of phenolic offering excellent mechanical and physical properties, have been developed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional phenolic resins. The features of these polymers such as no requirement for harsh catalysts, releasing no by-product, molecular design flexibility and low melt viscosity make this class of polymers a promising candidate for various industrial and academic applications. Several methods such as preparation of alloys with other high performance polymers...
Synthesis of acrylic based high internal phase emulsion polymers and their application in chromatography
Tunç, Yeliz; Hasırcı, Nesrin; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
High internal phase emulsion polymers (PolyHIPEs) are new generation materials with their high porosity and interconnected open-cell structures and finds applications in areas such as supports for catalytic systems, separation media and tissue engineering scaffolds. Styrene based PolyHIPEs are currently the most popular choice, but solvent compatibility and poor mechanical properties of these materials prevent their applications. Therefore development of new polyHIPEs with desired mechanical and cellular pr...
Effect of aromatic boronic acids on thermal characteristics of polybenzoxazine derivatives and composites
İpek, Halil; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2019)
Polybenzoxazines, a class of phenolics offering excellent mechanical and physical properties, have been developed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional phenolic resins. These materials possess low water absorption, low melt viscosity, near-zero shrinkage upon curing and releasing no by-products. In addition, molecular design flexibility of benzoxazine monomers gives opportunity to adjust the properties of the polybenzoxazines according to the application area making them advantageous for various i...
Syntheses, characterization and optical properties of fluorine containing benzimidazole derivatives
İleri, Merve; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Çırpan, Ali; Department of Chemistry (2015)
In the last decades use of conducting polymers as electrochromic materials attracted tremendous attention all over the world due to properties like processability, high optical contrasts, fast switching times and tuning band gap via structural modifications. Low band gap polymers are pursued in order to increase the conductivity. For that matter donor – acceptor – donor theory is the most effective and commonly used method. The donor – acceptor – donor approach is not only used for obtaining low band gap po...
Synthesis and surface modification of polyurethanes with chitosan for antibacterial properties
Kara, Filiz; AKSOY, EDA AYŞE; YÜKSEKDAĞ, ZEHRANUR; Hasırcı, Nesrin; AKSOY, SERPİL (2014-11-04)
Surface modification and providing antibacterial properties to the materials or devices are getting great attention especially in the last decades. In this study, polyurethane (PU) films were prepared by synthesizing them in medical purity from toluene diisocyanate and polypropylene ethylene glycol without using any other ingredients and then the film surfaces were modified by covalent immobilization of chitosan (CH) which has antibacterial activity. CH immobilized PU films (PU-CH) were found to be more hyd...
