In mining activities, there is water flow to mining environment which must be removed by mine dewatering method to provide suitable working conditions. One of the ways of mine dewatering is conducted via pumps there mainly two types of pumps are being used in mine dewatering operations, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps. Centrifugal pumps utilize the submersible as feeder to horizontal pumps in main stations for further pumping to ponds or collection dams at surface, while positive displacement pumps utilize single stage piston diaphragm pumps to remove water collected at mine bottom. Decision making in both of these system needs to be made by considering overall cost components rather than focusing merely on initial investment cost. This can be made by applying life cycle cost analysis to both of the system. Main objective of this study is to develop a basic decision support tool for selecting the most economic pump type. Research methodology followed in this research study entails literature survey regarding pump types and case scenario data to be used in economic analysis. Decision support tool was developed by integrating graphical user interfaces (GUI) so that pump selection could be made by decision makers. At the end, the program was tested by implementing a case study data. Results of the four years operation data in the program show that total net present cost of positive vi displacement pump yields 828,389 $ USD less than centrifugal pump net present costs value despite of the fact that positive displacement pump has total investment 711,960 $ USD more than centrifugal pumps.

Reliability-based maintenance optimization of walking draglines
Gölbaşı, Onur; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Mining Engineering (2015)
Dragline is an earthmover extensively utilized in open cast coal mines for overburden stripping activities. Since the machinery breakdowns may induce high amount of production losses, draglines are required to be operated with high availability. In this sense, effective maintenance policies are essential to improve longevity of dragline component and sustainability of operations. In this research study, it is aimed to develop a reliability-based maintenance optimization models for two walking draglines, Pag...
Surface coal mine area monitoring using multi-temporal high-resolution satellite imagery
Demirel, Nuray; Duzgun, H. Sebnem (Elsevier BV, 2011-04-01)
Surface mining activities, exploitation of ore and stripping and dumping overburden, cause changes on the land cover and land use of the mine area. Sustainable mining requires continuous monitoring of these changes to identify the long-term impacts of mining on environment and land cover to provide essential safety measures. In this sense, digital image classification provides a powerful tool to obtain a rigorous data and hence diminishes the essence of time-consuming and costly field measurements. There ar...
Stability investigation of Eti Copper Mine tailings dam using finite element analysis
Tanrıseven, Esra Nur; Bilgin, Hasan Aydın; Department of Mining Engineering (2012)
In mining industry, waste storage is a very prominent issue; in this respect, safety of storage structures is one of the leading problems in the industry. Most of the tailings dams require remedial measures, throughout their lifespan to increase their reliability. The objective of the study is to investigate stability problems of formerly constructed but newly raised Eti Copper Mine tailings dam and alternative dam geometries for future raises. Plenty of methods were developed to analyze the reliability of ...
Comparison of groundwater recharge estimation techniques: a case study from the Kucuk Menderes River basin in Turkey
Gundogdu, A; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Kirmizitas, H (2000-04-01)
Quantification of groundwater recharge is a basic prerequisite for efficient groundwater management. While there are several approaches to estimating groundwater recharge rates, some of the approaches proposed cannot be applied in basin-wide hydrogeological investigations due to a lack of data. Thus, some conventional recharge estimation techniques for which data are most often available have to be used in estimating groundwater recharge. In this study, water level fluctuation, the precipitation vs water le...
Indicator-based sustainability assessment for the mining sector plans: Case of Afsin-Elbistan Coal Basin
Yaylaci, Evren Deniz; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem (Elsevier BV, 2016-08-01)
Environmental, social and economic impacts of the mining sector are evaluated separately or holistically with different tools at the project- and strategic-level in order to achieve effective resource management and to prevent unsound mining operations. As coal is one of the extensively utilized primary energy sources in the world, the coal mining and its negative impacts are criticized frequently in terms of sustainability criteria. Therefore, integrating the sustainability criteria at the strategic level ...
