Waste is standing as a major problem in the body of construction industry. Lean thinking in construction accepts any inefficiency as waste which results with more usage of equipment, materials, labor, time or capital in larger quantities than those considered as necessary. Although inefficiency of design stages has been identified as a major factor that reduces the efficiency of construction projects, less attention has been paid on the relationship between lean thinking and architectural design process. Thus, this study focuses on lean wastes of architectural design sector by considering the importance of addressing the problems of the operation in order to eliminate the inefficiencies. In this respect, as the first stage, “8 Waste” categories of “Lean Production Philosophy” and their reflections on architectural design service processes were examined in this study. 28 Waste items under 8 categories were determined in the body of architectural design process as a result of semi-structured interviews conducted with senior architects performing in Ankara, Turkey. In the second stage, a questionnaire was executed over a larger population of architects to examine the “frequency of occurrence”, “impact over cost”, “impact over duration”, and “impact over quality” for each design waste item. The research aims to provide information for the architectural design sector to increase the efficiency of their processes. The statistical analysis of the questionairres shows that there is a shared understanding of impacts of waste items over architectural design processes, with strong statistical evidence over their validity.

Lean Design Management – An Evaluation of Waste Items for Architectural Design Process
Mazlum, Salih Kaan; Pekeriçli, Mehmet Koray (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2016-01-01)
Inefficiency stands as a major problem in construction industry. Lean thinking is a relatively new process improvement philosophy which approaches inefficiency by reducing the waste. Although the inefficiency of design stages has been associated with the poor results of construction projects, less attention has been paid on the relationship between lean thinking and architectural design process. While there is a strong potential for improvement in the design processes via application of lean thinking, an an...
Development of an IT-based tool for portfolio assessment and management for construction companies
Bilgin, Gözde; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Özorhon Orakçal, Beliz; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Development in the construction industry has leaded most of the construction companies to undertake more complex projects than before, which are generally executed concurrently. Therefore, project management routines of the companies may not support effective management of multi-projects. Project portfolio management approach has been suggested to meet requirements for coordinating multi-projects to meet strategic objectives under limited resources. Since project portfolio management requires a comprehensiv...
Case-based reasoning model for the management of design related changes in design-build construction projects
Özgüneş, Aydın; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2016)
Project changes constitutes to an important problem in construction projects which are unavoidable and may appear at any stage of the construction. Most of the time, project changes cause conflicts between the parties and end with change orders or claims that lead to time and money losses. Moreover, design related changes, which can be defined as variations related with the design process of the construction project, are referred as one of the most frequently seen project change types in construction projec...
An investigation into the implementation of construction automation and robotics technologies for construction waste management
Kılıçkan Öztürk, Sabire Melek; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2022-8)
The construction industry is responsible for tons of construction waste. It is crucial to take the necessary precautions to avoid the impacts of construction waste on the environment. With the help of developments in automation technology and building information modeling systems, robotics in the construction industry is getting more common every day. It is argued that construction robots can be effective in the management of construction waste. This study aims first to understand the reasons for construct...
Identifying the effects of lean construction principles on variability of project duration /
Erol, Hacı Hüseyin; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Performance of the construction projects have been criticized for many years due to their low productivity rates and cost overruns as well as significant delays. Increasing number of dissatisfied customers compel practitioners to reform conventional practices of construction management. Lean construction emerges as a result of change efforts in the industry. Lean construction promises a much better project performance by eliminating the waste and improving value to customer. Although many practical applicat...
