Capitalist urbanization is doomed to meet a dead-end. Hereby, from a utopian point of view, we propose the socialist city as a revolutionary alternative to overcome the capitalist crises. We discuss the principles of the socialist city in the light of references from socialist city expansions in the past and in contrast to today’s capitalist cities. We discuss how can the principle ideas of the socialist ideology such as equality, organization and productivity be spatialized, how can space serve publicness and socialization of the society, how can the urban space and geography be equal, and how can the socialist city serve productive forces against consumerism of the capitalist city.

Reconceptualizing the gentrification process: the case of Cihangir, İstanbul
Demirel, Şule; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2015)
Gentrification in the most general sense is the invasion of the working class quarters by the middle classes. Since the gentrification debate has revealed in 1964 by Ruth Glass, the term has been discussed too much. There have appeared various approaches by different scholars. Gentrification has not only become widespread but also integrated into wider urban and global processes after the 1980s. After more than 50 years in the gentrification literature, there have appeared new debates on the term. Since the...
Contesting neoliberal urbanisation : contemporary urban movements in Istanbul, the case of Gülsuyu-Gülensu neighbourhoods
Özdemir, Esin; Eraydın, Ayda; Department of City and Regional Planning (2013)
The shift from Keynesian to neo-liberal economic policies marked the changes in the urban agenda and the nature of urban movements in the last three decades. The neo-liberal urbanisation reinforced outstanding transformations on the development of urban space, especially in metropolitan areas, including Istanbul. The urban transformation projects, as instruments of neoliberal urbanisation, result in serious changes in this metropolitan area and encounter resistances from groups of people in the city. The pu...
The Neoliberal Restructuring of Turkey's Social Security System
Cosar, Simten; Yegenoglu, Metin (Monthly Review Foundation, 2009-04-01)
For almost thirty years Turkish capitalism has taken the form of neoliberalism. Turkey's subordination to the world neoliberal order started in the late 1970s and was pursued consistently after the 1980 military coup. The coup reflected Hayek's contention that a transition to "free markets" may require a dictatorship.1 By dissolving political and social opposition, the coup provided the necessary political environment for the shift from the import substitution industrialization that framed economic policy s...
City branding / image building as a new paradigm: the case of Eskişehir
Koç, Evrim; Eraydın, Ayda; Department of City and Regional Planning (2018)
In the last three decades cities have become the nodes of the global economy by enhancing their own competitive capacities; through improving their capabilities with respect to human capital, innovation, and creativity. They have struggled to become successful in competitive conditions as they have been following several strategies including urban branding, brand management and creating a new image. In Turkey, 2023 Tourism Vision identified 19 cities as candidates of cities with brands; therefore it introdu...
Continuity and Change in Public Policy: Redistribution, Exclusion and State Rescaling in Turkey
Bayırbağ, Mustafa Kemal (Wiley, 2013-07-01)
This article discusses potential reasons for the continuities in the broader policy agendas of capitalist states, despite radical shifts in economic policies, by employing the state-rescaling framework. Its main thrust is that, even though centrally designed policy programs mainly aim to give direction to the dynamics of the market economy, the institutional (re)structuring needed to operationalize such policy measures has been shaped around a politics of redistribution, a product both of the exclusionary r...
