Plastic materials have attracted attention in recent years because of their functionalities therefore; they are widely used in household and industry. As their usage increases, plastic waste amount also increases and this is an important environmental problem. Chemical recycling of these materials is a useful method to solve this problem because plastic materials can be converted into petrochemical feedstock with this method. In this study, tungstophosphoric acid (TPA) loaded SBA-15 materials were synthesized hydrothermally to be used in degradation of polypropylene. TPA was incorporated to the porous framework of SBA-15 with different W/Si ratios. The synthesized catalysts characterized using XRD, Nitrogen Physisorption technique, SEM and FTIR and their performances were tested in TGA. XRD analysis revealed that introducing TPA did not cause deformations in the regularity and the catalysts showed an amorphous structure. N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms showed that the synthesized materials exhibited type IV isotherms. The surface areas of the samples were in the range of 478-786 m2/g depending on the amount of TPA loaded. Pore size distributions showed their mesoporosity. The average pore sizes were approximately 7.0 nm. SEM images indicated the hexagonal structure. DRIFTS spectra showed that TPA loading resulted in the formation of Brønsted acid sites and as the amount of TPA increased, the peak intensity of the Brønsted acidity increased. TG analysis revealed that when catalyst amount used in the experiments and TPA amount loaded into the materials increased, the degradation temperature decreased. Activation energy values of the samples were between 92.5 and 165.8 kJ/mole depending on the TPA loading amount and they are lower than that of pure polypropylene degradation reaction.

Performance of TPA loaded sba-15 catalyst in polypropylene degradation reaction
Ersoy Yalçın, Ulviy; Tutumlu, Zeynep.; Department of Chemical Engineering (2019)
Plastic materials are widely used due to their low cost and easy processing properties. With an increase in plastic usage, the amount of plastic wastes has also increased, and this situation causes environmental problems. Landfilling, incineration, and recycling are the methods used for the disposal of plastic wastes. Landfilling is not a convenient method as it causes soil pollution. Incineration is also not preferred due to its harmful effects on the environment caused by toxic gases. Recycling seems to b...
Synthesis and characterization of sta incorporated mesoporous materials as catalysts for polyethylene pyrolysis
Kelebek, Neriman; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Department of Chemical Engineering (2016)
Pyrolysis of polymers, which is a process for recovery of the waste polymer, has attracted great attention in recent years due to the high amount of plastic waste present in nature. However, degradation rocess requires high amount of external energy to break long chain of chemical bonds in the polymer. For this reason, suitable catalysts with strong acid sites are necessary. High surface area silica structured mesoporous materials with narrow pore size distributions are excellent catalysts for these reaction...
Synthesis and surface modification of polyurethanes with chitosan for antibacterial properties
Kara, Filiz; AKSOY, EDA AYŞE; YÜKSEKDAĞ, ZEHRANUR; Hasırcı, Nesrin; AKSOY, SERPİL (2014-11-04)
Surface modification and providing antibacterial properties to the materials or devices are getting great attention especially in the last decades. In this study, polyurethane (PU) films were prepared by synthesizing them in medical purity from toluene diisocyanate and polypropylene ethylene glycol without using any other ingredients and then the film surfaces were modified by covalent immobilization of chitosan (CH) which has antibacterial activity. CH immobilized PU films (PU-CH) were found to be more hyd...
Synthesis and Characterization of Zirconium based Bulk Amorphous Alloys
Saltoğlu, İlkay; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat; Mehrabov, Amdulla (2005-09-28)
In recent years, bulk amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline materials have been synthesized in a number of ferrous and non-ferrous based alloys systems, which have gained some applications due to their unique physico-chemical and mechanical properties. In the last decade, Zr-based alloys with a wide supercooled liquid region and excellent glass forming ability have been discovered. These systems have promising application fields due to their mechanical properties; high tensile strength, high fracture toughne...
Use of inorganic natural nanotubes and synthetic carbon nanotubes in poly(lactic acid)
Erpek Yeniova, Canan Esma; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Özkoç, Güralp; Department of Chemical Engineering (2015)
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the most important biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, which has attracted great attention in the recent years owing to its excellent material properties. The main objective of this study was to process and characterize Halloysite nanotube (HNT)/PLA nanocomposites. The constituents were observed to be incompatible when processed by classical melt mixing methods, without HNT pre-treatments or addition of plasticizers which act as compatibilizer. In order to achieve the desir...
