Energy efficiency has become one of the most important concerns of the world recently. Rate of decrease of energy resources have been accelerated due to increased population and unconscious consumption. As a result, energy efficient new generation products are on the agenda for environmental issues. Furthermore, the more efficient the product, the less costly it consumes energy. Hence, people are encouraged to use energy efficient products which enables them to save more money. In addition, it has become obligatory to manufacture energy efficient products rather than being an option. This is regulated by certain rules determined by relevant commissions around the world. White goods, so dishwashers, have to obey certain consumption levels according to these regulations as well. In this thesis, a centrifugal pump for circulating the washing liquid in an energy efficient dishwasher, especially Arçelik dishwasher, is designed and constructed. The pump is required to deliver 60 l/min at 3020 rpm against a 300 mbar system. After the construction, its performance is evaluated by means of both Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and laboratory experiments. CFD helps the designer save time and money. Several geometries and conditions can be analyzed in certain time without requiring any real product but eligible hardware and software. After deciding the final design, prototypes are produced and tested under actual conditions. At the end of this study, performance target is reached with acceptable energy efficiency.

Parametric analysis of BIM-based building energy performance for supporting multi-objective optimization
Can, Esra; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-5-11)
Building energy efficiency comes into prominence as buildings constitute a significant portion of world energy consumption and CO2 emissions. To achieve energy-efficient buildings, energy performance assessments should be conducted meticulously, yet it is difficult to comprehensively estimate the buildings’ energy consumption since energy performance assessments are complex multi-criteria problems that are affected by many factors such as building orientation, envelope design, climatic conditions, daylight ...
Energy efficiency perspectives of femtocells in internet of things: recent advances and challenges
Al-Turjman, Fadi M.; Imran, Muhammad; Bakhsh, Sheikh Tahir (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017)
Energy efficiency is a growing concern in every aspect of the technology. Apart from maintaining profitability, energy efficiency means a decrease in the overall environmental effects, which is a serious concern in today's world. Using a femtocell in Internet of Things (IoT) can boost energy efficiency. To illustrate, femtocells can be used in smart homes, which is a subpart of the smart grid, as a communication mechanism in order to manage energy efficiency. Moreover, femtocells can be used in many IoT app...
Policy Framework for Energy Retrofitting of Built Heritage: A Critical Comparison of UK and Turkey
Jahed, Negin; Aktas, Yasemin D.; Rickaby, Peter; Bilgin Altınöz, Ayşe Güliz (MDPI AG, 2020-06-01)
Energy efficiency is one of the most prominent global challenges of our era. Heritage buildings usually have a poor energy performance, not necessarily because of their intrinsic constructive features but due to their mostly dilapidated condition owed to age and previous damage, exacerbated by other factors such as the limited maintenance allowed by the restrictive legal framework and/or residents not being able to afford retrofit. On both national and international levels, energy efficiency measures are co...
Feasibility of pumped-storage hydraulic systems based on hourly variation of electricity prices
Barbaros, Efe; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Global energy demand increases every day due to growing needs. The ideal of eco-friendly, sustainable and low cost energy generation relying on countries’ own domestic sources increases the interest in renewable energy in the 21st century. However, the intermittent nature of the renewable energy brings the importance of and the need for energy storage to surface. Pumped storage hydroelectricity (PSH) has been in use worldwide for a long time with this purpose thanks to its large scale storage capacity and p...
Operation strategies of pumped storage hydropower plants under electricity spot market: case study of Uluabat hydropower plant
Turan, Alper; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
In recent years, energy has been one of the most challenging problems around the world. In particular, energy is the building block for commercial and social settings in the modern world. Therefore, energy is a critical element for economic and human development. Diminishing fossil fuel resources and detrimental effects of facilities operated on fossil fuels have brought forward renewable energy today, and renewable energy resources will continue to play a significant role in the future. However, renewable ...
