Seismic performance assessment of confined masonry buildings

Although it is a known fact that confined masonry construction has many advantages over unreinforced masonry construction, its application has been very limited in Turkish construction practice. One of the reasons for this issue is that the seismic regulations in Turkey do not explicitly enforce or even encourage the use of confined masonry structural systems. Now, being on the verge of releasing a new version of the Turkish seismic code, it seems to be an appropriate time to adapt confined ma-sonry to the Turkish construction practice. This study intents to reveal why such at-tempts are necessary by comparing the behaviour of unreinforced and confined ma-sonry on the building scale. In the first phase of the study, standards for unreinforced masonry and confined ma-sonry buildings around the world are given. Studies regarding unreinforced and con-fined masonry walls are summarized. Idealized tri-linear capacity curves are used to define the wall capacities and pushover analysis is performed to find the storey shear capacities of the critical storey of each model following the theory of Tomazevic. 6 different floor plans are designed as unreinforced masonry and confined masonry buildings with changing geometrical and mechanical properties. Demand is repre-sented by ten real ground motion records of changing PGA values. Capacity spec-trum method of FEMA 440 is used to carry out the performance analysis of build-ings. The results of the performance analysis reveal the superior behaviour of con-fined masonry buildings over unreinforced masonry buildings against the seismic action.

Seismic performance assessment of confined masonry construction at component and structure levels
Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Erkoseoglu, Gulden (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-02-01)
There are different techniques for masonry construction. Among these, confined masonry (CM) buildings may be regarded as an upgrade for unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings, which is the most common type. In Turkey, URM construction has been popular, especially up to the end of 1980s. These rather old URM buildings constitute a significant percent of the existing building stock. On the other hand, CM construction seems to be rare when compared to its URM counterpart in Turkey. This fact was also reflected i...
Seismic performance assessment of wide beam infill joist block frame structures in Turkey
Karaaslan, Enes; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Wide-beam frame buildings are prevalent in Turkey since 1980’s due to their advantageous characteristics such as ease of construction, construction speed and cost efficiency. However; according to recent experimental studies, wide beam systems demonstrate poor energy dissipation capacity under earthquake. The capacities of the wide-beams may not fully developed at the beam-column joints. The beam reinforcements that do not anchor to the core area of the columns may not reach their full capacities unless spe...
Seismic vulnerability, behavior and design of tunnel form building structures
Balkaya, C; Kalkan, E (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
Multi-story reinforced concrete tunnel form buildings are one of the common structural types in regions prone to high seismic risk due to the buildings inherent earthquake resistance and ease of construction. Despite their good performance during earthquakes in 1999 in Turkey, and abundance of such structures scattered worldwide, current seismic codes and design provisions provide insufficient guidelines for their seismic design. As a compensatory measure, a series of modal and nonlinear static analyses are...
SEISMIC SHEAR CAPACITY OF REINFORCED MASONRY PIERS
Sucuoğlu, Haluk (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 1991-07-01)
Masonry buildings have been, and remain, a popular form for economically enclosing space. Whereas such buildings are safe under gravity loads, most are vulnerable to horizontal loads due to earthquakes. Observations following an earthquake and experimental programs have shown that piers between openings are the most vulnerable part of a masonry building, and that the failure of such piers is due in the majority of cases to shear (or diagonal tension). Accordingly, the study described concerns the seismic...
