The intensity of terrorist activities and threats have become a major problem in modern world. Several factors in the way modern societies live have made easier to conduct terrorism activities. Developed societies are dependent on complex and vulnerable systems that could be target, such as railways, pipelines, large shopping areas, airlines, subway systems and large business/trade centers. The increase in the number of domestic and international terrorist activities by each passing day have forced researchers to examine the behavior of structures to blast loads. In order to get a better understanding of how structural elements behave under blast loading, a number of analytical methods were developed to predict the response of steel members subjected to blast loading. The prediction of element behavior during blast loading is a complex problem given the effect of geometry and the material nonlinearity on the response. Therefore, it is needed to verify the results of analytical methods used to predict the behavior of structural elements under blast loading and to understand the effect of the model parameters on the prediction results. In this study, first, experimental results were used to verify the analytical methods. General purpose finite element software ABAQUS was used to analyze steel beam-columns subjected to blast loading and the material model parameters were calibrated. Two models, one in elastic range, the other undergoing plastic deformation were used in the calibration study. Sensitivity analyses were then conducted to understand the effect of the many modeling and loading parameters, including material models, boundary conditions and loading assumptions, on the predicted results for the blast loading of columns.

A Hadoop solution for ballistic image analysis and recognition
Kocakulak, Hakan; Taşkaya Temizel, Tuğba (2011-07-08)
The importance of ballistic applications has been recently recognized due to the increasing crime and terrorism threats and incidents around the world. Ballistic image analysis is one of the application areas which requires immediate response with high precision from large databases. Here, the microscopic markings on cartridge case of a bullet obtained in a crime scene are compared with that of images on ballistic databases for similarity in order to find out whether it is fired from any of the firearms wit...
Determination of the postexplosion residues of nitro group containing explosives in soil with GC-MS and GC-TEA
Dursun, Hayrettin; Aygün, Rüveyde Sezer; Department of Chemistry (2007)
There is an increase in bombing assaults in recent years in our country. Determining the explosive material used in these cases by the quick and correct analysis of the evidence obtained after the explosions, is an important starting point for the investigations which are done to reach the perpetrators. The forensic chemistry investigations have to be correct, exact and rapid in order to reach the right criminal. In this study, the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Gas Chromatography-Thermal ...
Is there any security preference for Turkey between the Eu and U.S.?
Ünal, Kemal; Bağcı, Hüseyin; Department of European Studies (2005)
The recent global security challenges such as terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction etc. have altered the security perceptions of the countries. For opposing those new security threats the U.S. and the EU generated their own security discourses. Accordingly, they tackle the issues with diverging perceptions. This diversion paves the way for a debate between two sides. In the mean time, Turkey has established her security architecture in accordance with the Western international community. ...
A Study on sparse array configurations for ultra-wideband imaging applications
Çetin, Beyzat Talat; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2018)
The increased number of terror attacks and crimes have grown a demand for enhancing public security systems. In this sense reliable, cost effective, fast and physically non-hazardous imaging systems should be designed. Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)arrayswithultra-wideband(UWB)technologyoffersgreatadvantageousfor shortrangeimagingapplicationssuchasconcealedweapondetection(CWD).Inthis thesis, it is aimed to develop a design tool for MIMO array structures to be used in UWB, near-field (NF) imaging applica...
The root causes of terrorism
Çınar, Bekir (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2009-6-1)
This paper aims to discuss the root causes of terrorism, which might be political systems and political administration and policies. It debates that without knowing the root cause of terrorism, there will be no plausible solution to the problem. Further, the paper tries to prove that the root causes of terrorism might not be economic, social, ideological or beliefs and religions. The core theme of terrorism can be injustice that is product of the political system and its activities. Therefore, the political...
