Yeşilçay river basin is one of the main sources of İstanbul urban water supply system through the “Yeşilçay Drinking Water Plan”. Construction of two dams: Sungurlu Dam on Sungurlu stream and Osmangazi Dam on Göksu River have started to provide domestic and industrial water, flood control and energy production. Ağva is a small town which has population of about 2,500 in winter time but hosts around 15,000 people in the summer time located on the intersection of Göksu and Sungurlu streams called Yeşilçay river basin. In this study, the flood routing model applications for the Sungurlu and Osmangazi Dams are studied in order to identify risk areas and decide the strategies for flood prevention and protection for the Town Ağva. Interrelation between the variables such as computational grid size, DEM resolution, computation time and flood area is discussed after 150 runs of FLO-2D software with different settings. Twenty water level control points are set to record flood water levels and velocities. Around 1046 pieces of settlement is defined to the model by assigning reduction factors to the mesh elements. Furthermore, dam breach modeling results are also evaluated for different scenario and flood hazard maps are created by the mapper tool for each scenarios. The results represented that on the center of the Ağva for 100 years return peiod the average flow depth can be 1.5 m for Sungurlu Dam flood model and 2 m for Osmangazi Dam flood model. Also the backwater flooding occurrence on the river basin and the requirement of early warning system were observed.

Computer-assisted Design of Diversion Weirs
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (null; 2005-07-12)
A diversion weir is a headwork facility built across a river to raise water level and to divert water for various purposes, such as irrigation, hydropower generation, etc. In this study, a Windows-based, visual, and user friendly program named WINDWEIR is developed in Visual Basic.NET programming language for the optimum design of a diversion weir with sidewise intakes. The methodology used in the program is developed with reference to the design guidelines reported in the literature and in accordance with ...
Evaluation of eutrophication control strategies for the Keban Dam reservoir
Soyupak, S; Mukhallalati, L; Yemisen, D; Bayar, A; Yurteri, C (1997-04-15)
The reservoir of the Keban Dam in eastern Anatolia is a very deep and large water body subject to significant seasonal water level fluctuations within a given hydrological year. At the present time, different sections of the reservoir have different trophic status and the upper portion of the reservoir, in particular, is eutrophic. In this regard, there is a need for the assessment of alternative strategies to be implemented for phosphorus and thus eutrophication control in this segment of the reservoir. In...
Situational analysis of flood and drought in Rwanda
Asumadu-Sarkodie, Samuel; Rufangura, Patrick; Jayaweera, MPC Herath; Owusu, Phebe Asantewaa (2017-6-19)
In this paper, a situational analysis of flood and drought in Rwanda were assessed using AQUEDUCT Global Flood Analyzer based on the population, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and urban damage for current and future projections (2030). In order to estimate future changes, three scenarios from: Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) and Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5th Assessment Report which represents climate change and socioeconomic change scen...
Development of a computer program for optimum design of diversion weirs
Turan, Kamil Hakan; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
A diversion weir is a headwork facility built across a river to raise the water level and to divert water for various purposes, such as irrigation, hydropower generation, etc. Diversion weirs with sidewise intakes are widely used in plain rivers. They are composed of many structural components which are designed for different purposes. In this thesis, a Windows-based, visual, user friendly program named WINDWEIR was developed in Visual Basic.NET programming language for the optimum design of a diversion wei...
Contamination risk assessment for groundwater of the Kucuk Menderes River basin, Izmir, Turkey
Pusatli, OT; Camur, MZ; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2000-04-01)
A new water management plan is needed for the Kucuk Menderes River basin in Turkey, due to increasing water demand and decreasing quality of the groundwater. Vulnerability, quality and risk assessments were performed using a hybrid model containing both hydrogeological and hydrochemical parameters for managing irrigation waters in the basin. The relative contamination (quality) distribution of groundwater at present was established using an irrigation water quality index. The distribution shows the contamin...
