In this theses, electrically conductive silver nanowire (Ag NW) filled polylactide (PLA) nanocomposites were fabricated and characterized. Ag NWs/PLA nanocomposite films were fabricated using simple solution mixing method and casted onto glass substrates via doctor blading. Following the obtainment of free standing nanocomposites through peeling off, electrical conductivity of the fabricated nanocomposites, interfacial interactions between Ag NWs and PLA as well as nanocomposite morphology, degree of alignment of Ag NWs, transition temperature and crystallinity among with mechanical performance were investigated. Nanowires showed good dispersion within the PLA matrix. Due to their high aspect ratio (≈150), a percolation threshold of 0.13 vol.% was measured for the nanocomposites. Conductivity of the nanocomposites at the maximum loading (1.74 vol.%) was measured as 27 S/m. It was also found that the transition temperatures of PLA matrix remain the same following the formation of nanocomposites.

Processing and characterization of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (c/c-sic) matrix composites
Tülbez, Simge; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Esen, Ziya; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2015)
The current study was undertaken to investigate the production and characterization of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Silicon Carbide (C/C-SiC) Matrix Composites. Liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) method was utilized to produce the C/C-SiC composites. Processing of these composites via LSI process composed of three main stages. CFRP production, pyrolysis and liquid silicon infiltration. Each production stage has an important effect on the efficiency of the LSI process, therefore present study investigates the effe...
Fabrication of microporous ceramics from ceramic powders of quartz-natural zeolite mixtures
San, O; Abali, S; Hoşten, Çetin (Elsevier BV, 2003-01-01)
The possibility of producing ceramic powders suitable for the fabrication of microporous filters was investigated through the thermal treatment of the powder mixtures of a high-purity (99.09% SiO2) quartz and clinoptilolite type of natural zeolite. The quartz and zeolite, mixed in the ratio of 3:1 by weight, was wet ground in a ball mill, the powder was sieved on a 90-mum screen, and the undersize was dried and sintered in the powder form at the temperatures of 1000, 1100 and 1200degreesC for 7 h in an air ...
Production of epoxide functionalized boehmite nanoparticles and their use in epoxide nanocomposites
Coniku, Anisa; Gündüz, Güngör; Maviş, Bora; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
In the present study the effects of addition of organically functionalized boehmite nano-particles on the mechanical properties of epoxy polymers were analyzed. Nanosize platelets of boehmite powders were produced via a hydrothermal process from the raw material aluminum trihydroxide Al(OH)3 provided by a a chemical supplier, but which in future studies can be replaced by local resources of aluminum trihydroxide available in Seydişehir, Turkey. The ground aluminum trihydroxide particles were submitted to a ...
Processing and characterization of carbon nanotube based conductive polymer composites
Yeşil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
The aim of this study was to improve the mechanical and electrical properties of conductive polymer composites. For this purpose, different studies were performed in this dissertation. In order to investigate the effects of the carbon nanotube (CNT) surface treatment on the morphology, electrical and mechanical properties of the composites, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) based conductive polymer composites were prepared by using as-received, purified and modified carbon nanotubes in a twin screw extrude...
