Polyurethane elastomer (Thermoplastic Polyurethane-TPU) has desirable properties for many applications including footwear, packaging, protective coatings, cables, wires and tubes in the mainly automotive and construction industries. Huntite and Hydromagnesite are naturally occurring minerals that has been used as fire retardants commercially since the late 1980’s. The World’s largest reserve of this mineral has been found in Turkey. The main purpose of present work is to investigate the combustion and thermal degradation characteristics of the flame retardant TPU based composites containing huntite and hydromagnesite with and without expandable graphite. The combustion and the thermal degradation characteristics of composites are investigated by LOI, UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mass loss calorimeter. Char residues remained after mass loss calorimeter test are investigated by conducting attenuated total reflectance – Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The mechanical properties of the composites are also investigated by tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

Background: Aromatic polyamides are important materials having outstanding thermal, electronic and mechanical properties among high performance polymers and industrial plastics. In addition, aromatic polyamides can be utilized in electronic devices with their low dielectric constant which indicates the storage capacity of these devices. Objective: Free volume is very important for dielectric materials and increase in free volume of a polymer reduces its dielectric constant. The aims of the current study are...
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF REPAIRED CARBON FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER COMPOSITES
Sonat, Emine Evren; Özerinç, Sezer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021-12-10)
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are increasingly used in the aerospace industry due to their high specific strength compared to conventional metallic materials. However, a significant shortcoming of these composites is their increased susceptibility to damage. Structural repair is a common method to restore the load-carrying capacity of a damaged part when the damage size exceeds the pre-defined tolerances. Scarf and stepped bonded repair methods are the primary choice for cases that requi...
Sensitivity Analysis of Distortion of Carburized Steel Shafts Using Computer Simulations
Yazır, Büşra; Evcil, Elif; Yıldız, Seçil; Davut, Kemal; Şimşir, Caner (null; 2016-12-01)
Carburizing and subsequent quenching heat treatments are commonly used industrial processes to improve the properties and performance of steel shafts. Undesired dimensional and shape changes (distortion) related to these treatments are still the most frequent reason for expensive and time consuming corrective operations, low performance during service and even product rejection. The major aim of this study is to identify the suitable control parameters for subsequent optimization of the carburized quenching...
Multifunctional properties of polymer foams and composites
Özkutlu Demirel, Merve; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2020-9)
Polymer foams are low-density materials that consist of solid and gas phases and are used for insulation and transportation applications. This study aims to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) foams with low density and improved thermal and mechanical properties using syntactic foam production and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming methods. Syntactic foams were produced dispersing 5, 10, and 15 wt.% hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) in the PMMA matrix. Using different HGM types based on their density, su...
