The challenges faced by the families of choice of LGBTQs when confronted with the heteronormative structure of family in society have already been covered at length, both in Turkish and foreign literature. In contrast, there have to date been few academic studies of the experiences of families that were established according to the settled heteronormative norm in society, but then come to include a self-identifying LGBTQ child as a family member. In this regard, this thesis departs from the question: How does the family transform after self-identified LGBTQ children come out to their families of origin? In a search for answers, this study focuses on families with self-identifying LGBTQ children, and investigates coming out as an interactive familial process. Furthermore, in highlighting the important role of such family groups as LISTAG, LADEG+ and Ankara Rainbow Families in Turkey, it claims that the presence of different sexualities in the family can bring about change in society. These arguments are investigated through data collected during semi-structured, open-ended and in-depth interviews with 11 mothers who came to be activists after the disclosure of their children, and their 11 self-identifying LGBTQ young adult/adult children, meaning that 11 family systems are examined. Benefiting from the conceptualizations of Family Systems Theory, such as ‘system’, ‘subsystem’, ‘boundary’, ‘change’, and ‘adaptability’, this study explores how the coming out experiences of LGBTQ children to their families of origin affect intra-familial dynamics.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARENTS AND FRIENDS - CROSS-SECTIONAL AND RETROSPECTIVE ACCOUNTS
HORTACSU, N; Gençöz, Tülin (1993-05-01)
We investigated Turkish high school and university students' perceptions of their relationships with their parents and friends in two studies using cross-sectional and retrospective methods. Subjects in both studies rated 31 items describing their relationships with one significant other from two perspectives: their own point of view and that of their relationship partner (mother, father, or best same-sex friend). Results indicated age-related trends for perceptions of development of relationships with sign...
Change and stability with respect to attitudes and practices related to marriage in Ashkabat, Baku, and Ankara: Three Turkic cultures
Hortacsu, N; Bastug, SS; Muhammetberdiev, O (2001-04-01)
Changes in practices and views related to marriage were investigated by conducting interviews with respondents of Turkic origin residing in the capitals of Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan: three Turkic cultures with different historical backgrounds. The results revealed that, with some exceptions, practices related to marriage demonstrated a trend toward modernity in all three samples. The most rapid and consistent pattern of transition was evidenced for the Ankara sample, the Ashkabat sample revealed ...
Europeanization of minorities vs. minorities of europeanization: historicizing european identity
Ongur, Hakan Övünç; Yurdusev, Ahmet Nuri; Department of International Relations (2011)
The purpose of this dissertation is to answer ‘if we can live together?’, through establishing a historical approach towards the concepts of Europeanization, European identity and the rights of minorities. The main argument reads that within the historical understanding of Europeanization, it is theoretically impossible to speak of a common European identity that European peoples and societies could agree upon. The problem is that such impossibility cannot be explained by the mainstream political identity a...
Transformation of Turkish Islamism and the Rise of the Justice and Development Party
Şen, Mustafa (2010-01-01)
Deviating from the mainstream analyses of the AKP that see the rise of AKP to power as a result of the struggle between ocentero and operiphery,o this study is an attempt to analyze and understand the modalities of inclusion and accommodation of Turkish Islamism into the sociopolitical structure of Turkey. Therefore, it specially focuses on three interwoven processes: the articulation of Turkish Islamism with the Turkish Islamic synthesis; permanent enlargement of the religious field; and articulation betwe...
Intergenerational solidarity networks of instrumental and cultural transfers within migrant families in Turkey
Kalaycioglu, S; Rittersberger, Helga İda (2000-09-01)
Over the last fifty years, the pattern of family life in Turkey has been seriously affected by migration. Despite this, there remains a high degree of solidarity typified by transfers of income, material goods and cultural mores between and within family generations. This article is based on the life histories of fifteen migrant families living in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. In-depth interviews were used to collect information about at least three generations in each family. Information was collecte...
