Polymer flooding is a chemical enhanced oil recovery method which aims to increase oil production from a water flooded oil reservoir by increase in water viscosity and reduction in water-oil mobility ratio. These changes result in significant increase in sweep efficiency of water comparing with water-only flooding technique. The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of multilayer reservoirs under polymer flooding process, considering effects of reservoir characteristics, polymer properties and operational parameters. This research employs a commercial reservoir simulator to model the fluid flow in a polymer-flooded reservoir. A representative reservoir model is built in CMG IMEX black oil commercial simulator and an experimental design methodology is followed to include uncertainties in different parameters to create various reservoir and polymer injection (10,000) schemes. According to the performance indicators collected from the simulation runs, an optimization study is carried out to determine the optimum parameters ranges to maximize t he performance of polymer flooding. To evaluate the performance of the flooding operation the performance indicators are used to calculate efficiency and water cut for ten years of injection with two- year intervals. A data driven screening tool that utilizes artificial neural networks is trained with the inputs and outputs of the simulator. This developed tool can be used to assess a large number of scenarios within a fraction of a second. Prediction performance of the tool is inspected with numerical simulator results and an average absolute error of ±0.06 bbl/lb and ±0.02 bbl/bbl are reported for efficiency and water cut outputs. Lastly, to ease the usability of the screening tool, a graphical user interface is generated.

Development of a screening model for the cyclic steam injection (CSI) process
Yalgın, Gamze; Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Artun, Emre; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2017)
Cyclic steam injection (CSI), a single-well enhanced oil recovery method for heavy oil reservoirs, is characterized with three stages: injection, soaking, and production which altogether constitute a cycle. In this study, it is aimed to develop a screening model that can be used to accept or reject a given CSI proposal from a representative performance indicator. This indicator is estimated from a large set of reservoir & CSI design characteristics, using the screening model developed. The model has been tr...
Candidate selection process for polymer gel application by using artificial neural networks
Örs, Oytun; Sınayuç, Çağlar; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2017)
Rapid increase in water-oil ratio has been one of the most important challenges of the oil companies that are producing from the mature oil fields. For this reason, various studies have been conducted to diminish the excessive water production. One of the most widely used chemical shutoff technique, polymer gel treatment, involves injection of different polymers into the production wells in order to plug the easy flow pathways of the excessive water. For the successful application of the polymer gel treatme...
Optimization of CO₂ EOR and storage design under uncertainity
Bender, Serdar; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2016)
The combination of CO₂ enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and permanent CO₂ storage in mature oil reservoirs have the potential to provide a critical near-term solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the literature, although there are many studies about CO₂ storage and EOR, only a few studies have focused on maximizing both the oil recovery and the CO₂ storage. Moreover, these studies are either experimental or conducted using synthetic reservoir models. Typically, pure CO₂ has the property of mixing wi...
Random walk particle modelling of polymer injection using matlab reservoir simulation toolbox
Mamak, Gökhan; Durgut, İsmail; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2017)
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is essential to increase the maximum recoverable oil by natural means of production. Having chosen an EOR method, the effectiveness of the method should be analyzed before applying to a reservoir since the methods are generally costly. Polymer injection is a chemical EOR process, where the injected polymer with water increases the water viscosity, and help increasing the sweep efficiency in the reservoir. In order to model the effects of polymer injection, the random-walk particl...
An experimental study on single well steam assisted gravity drainage
Akın, Serhat (2000-01-01)
Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is one of the more popular enhanced oil recovery method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In conventional SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and displaces heated oil toward the production well. There are several variations of this process: vertical injector-horizontal producer and singlewell (SW) SAGD where only one horizontal well is used by injecting steam from...
