The central topic of this study is the nexus between water and hydroelectricity. The main issue discussed here is how economic activity influences and is being influenced by water management, hydroelectricity production and electricity trade in key trans-boundary river basins. The unit of analysis is the state, the limits of which are defined by modern political boundaries; and the geographically demarcated river basins that involve the selected cases are subject to evaluation in broader context. In terms of energy trade relations, the primary focus is on the dyadic interconnections between the riparians, although basin-wide regional electricity trade relations are discussed in a complementary manner. The research question this study aims to address is how and to what degree state-level water management policies affect and are being affected by the dyad-level hydro-power trade. The initial hypothesis tested is that there is a dialectical and inverse rela-tionship between the level of trade (or sharing) of hydroelectricity between political units in a transboundary river basin and the number and severity of water-induced and mostly economy based dyadic issue areas between riparians. The findings of the study confirm the hypothesis. This thesis assumes that there are some factors that may augment or impede the se-verity and the number issue areas between the riparians in key river basins, and also, that may increase or decrease the level of hydropower traded across boundaries. These are the geographical features of the cases; institutional and legal frameworks that deal with water, energy and environment issues in specific river basins; the vary-ing nature of backgrounds based on environmental histories; and the structure and size of the economic activity within a river basin. The chapters of this study are de-signed in accordance, with the focus being on the economic aspects of dams, which play a decisive role in water management, economic development, and hydropower production.

Evaluation of the water-food nexus with the focus on agricultural water management in the Upper Sakarya watershed
Özel, Beyza; Alp, Emre; Department of Environmental Engineering (2021-5-15)
This study investigates the tradeoffs between water and food (agriculture) nexus and evaluates alternative scenarios focusing on sustainable water governance for agricultural production in Upper Sakarya Basin. For this purpose, pressures on surface water and groundwater resources are determined for the study period (2004-2016) by considering inputs and outputs such as demand, supply, and discharge by all sectors. With concentrating on the impacts on demand and supply dynamics, the effectiveness of managemen...
Numerical modeling of Edremit geothermal field
Günay, Emre; Karahanoğlu, Nurkan; Department of Geological Engineering (2012)
The purpose of this study is to examine the geothermal potential, sustainability, and reinjection possibility of Edremit geothermal field. In order to investigate this, a numerical model consisting of a hot and cold water aquifer system is established. A two dimensional cross sectional model is set to simulate this geothermal system. Different pressure and temperature values are applied to the nodes at the boundaries to perform a steady state calibration which minimizes the computed results and observed val...
Synthesis and characterisation of PANI- coated Heliotrope Leaves (PANI@HL) with high clean-up capacity for Orange G dye from aqueous media

The main objective of this study is to optimise a new composite for the depollution of contaminated water. This pollution can have adverse effects on both human health and the environment. The aim of this work was the elaboration and characterisation of a Novel polyaniline composite with plant leaf powder of Heliotrope (PANI@HL) for the removal of Orange G dye in an aqueous media. Hence, the physicochemical and morphological composition of PANI@HL were characterised by field-emission-scanning-electron-micro...
Investigation of non-point source pollution potential in the watershed of porsuk dam reservoir
Küçük, Elif; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
The achievement of good water quality status depends not only on point source control, but also on minimizing the contribution of non-point sources on pollution. Although non-point source pollution includes numerous components, agriculture has been considered as the primary activity responsible from deterioration in the quality of water resources. In this thesis, a hypothetical assessment was conducted to assess the relative impacts of different agricultural practices on the Watershed of the Porsuk Dam Rese...
Two-phase anaerobic digestion of semi-solid organic wastes
Doğan, Eylem; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
The objective of this study is to illustrate that phase separation improves the efficiency of an anaerobic system which digests semi-solid organic wastes. Organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was the semi-solid organic waste investigated. In the first part of the study, the optimum operational conditions for acidified reactor were determined by considering the volatile solid (VS) reductions and average acidification percentages at the end of two experimental sets conducted. Organic loading rate...
