In this thesis we give a presentation of some gluing results of G2-manifolds. We concentrate on the gluing method of Kovalev, in which one glues two exponentially asymptotically cylindrical G2-manifolds along their boundaries to obtain a compact G2-manifold. In particular, we present a Hodge theory result of Nordström which he used to give a local diffeomorphism between a certain moduli space of gluing data and the moduli space of torsion-free G2-structures on the glued manifold.

On the generalizations and properties of Abramovich-Wickstead spaces
Polat, Faruk; Alpay, Şafak; Department of Mathematics (2008)
In this thesis, we study two problems. The first problem is to introduce the general version of Abramovich-Wickstead type spaces and investigate its order properties. In particular, we study the ideals, order bounded sets, disjointness properties, Dedekind completion and the norm properties of this Riesz space. We also define a new concrete example of Riesz space-valued uniformly continuous functions, denoted by CDr0 which generalizes the original Abramovich-Wickstead space. It is also shown that similar sp...
A critical reading of the Ottoman-Turkish hamam as a queered space
Pasin, Burkay; Turan Özkaya, Belgin; Department of Architecture (2014)
This dissertation analyzes the Ottoman-Turkish hamam as a queered space. I follow a combined research methodology in which oral history is the primary method of gathering knowledge, while literature review, questionnaire survey and case analyses are supplementary. In Chapter 3, I argue that in architectural history writing, the hamam is constructed as a desexualized archetype, while in art history, popular literature and media it is reduced to a sexual stereotype. In Chapter 4, I analyze how the hamam works...
Tight contact structures on hyperbolic three-manifolds
Seçgin, Merve; Arıkan, Mehmet Fırat; Department of Mathematics (2018)
In this dissertation, we study tight contact structures on hyperbolic 3-manifolds and homology spheres. We build a family of infinitely many hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting tight contact structures. To put it more explicitly, we consider a certain infinite family of surface bundles over the circle whose monodromies are taken from some collection of pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms. We show the existence of tight contact structure on every closed 3-manifold obtained via rational r-surgery along a section of an...
Generating the surface mapping class group by torsion elements
Yıldız, Oğuz; Korkmaz, Mustafa; Department of Mathematics (2020-12-24)
n this thesis, we study generators of the mapping class groupMod(Σg)of a closedconnected orientable surfaceΣgof genusg. The mapping class groupMod(Σg)isknown to be generated by three involutions ifg≥8and by two torsion elements oforder4g+ 2. We show that the mapping class group is also generated by three involutions for sur-faces with smaller genera and by two torsion elements of smaller orders.
Using an electronic gyroscope with real-time microcontroller; design and implementation of an impedance type kinesthetic interface with high pose, force and timing fidelity
Sızlayan, Seyit Yiğit; Ankaralı, Mustafa Mert; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
In this thesis, we propose the design of a 1-DOF kinaesthetic (kinesthetic) force feedback interface for haptic and other robotic applications. The developed system is based on direct-drive principle. Thus, it provides a mechanically robust (and easy-to-build), and affordable solution. The major advantage of the direct-drive approach is that the coupling between the actuator and human motion is transparent, a desired feature for human-machine interfaces. The main drawback of a direct-drive actuator interfac...
